I have a 2000 focus with the Zetec that will not start. It has spark, but
no fuel, even at the input of the filter. I tried resetting the fuel
cutoff, checked the fuses and the fuel pump relay. I then dropped the tank
enough to access the fuel pump and I found a 5 wire connector going to the
pump, and another 3 wire connector going into the tank on the driver's side
(fuel level sensor?). I don't have a wiring diagram for this car, so I
need to know the function of the 5 wires?
Only 1 wire (white/red) has +12V when the key is in the run or start
position, but it also shows +12V after I remove the fuel pump fuse and
relay, so I doubt that it is the actual power for the pump. There are two
black wires (ground I assume?), a green/orange (I suspect fuel pump power?),
and what appears to be a brown/red(?).
If anyone could offer some suggestions, or a wiring diagram, it would be
appreciated.

There should be a fuel-pump-relay .
If you can dismount it and bridge the power contact you know that the electrical power is OK ( if yoy bridge the relay and the pump runs) or if it doen't run ther is something wrong with the relay itself or withe the contol voltage to this relay .

Check your owner's manual for the location. It's documented in there, and should be located under the hood. I'm not sure, but I do believe that the relay for the headlights is the same part number as the relay for the fuel pump. If not, some other relay with a function you can test has a matching part number. Make sure that relay works, then swap it out for your fuel pump relay.

Not to get you down, but generally the fuel pump is the problem, not the relay. There is a fuse also located under the hood that you can check. Use the same size fuse, of course, and if it blows immediately, then you need a new fuel pump.

I suggest you buy a Chiltons or Haynes manual if you work on the vehicle -- it is well worth the $15-20.

I went to the garage and got mine. Here's whats on the wiring diagrams:

Wht/Red - Fuel level sensor

Brn/Red - Fuel level sensor

Blk - to Fuel Pump control Module (almost certainly Ground, as BLK also goes from fuel pump module to ground)

Grn/Org - to Fuel Pump Control Module

At the fuel pump module:

Grn/Org - to fuel shutoff inertial switch

Fuel shutoff switch:

Blk/Yel to Fuel pump rely

etc., etc., etc.


Tracing it all the way back, it does appear that Grn/Org is the positive 12v feed to the fuel pump.


As whynot says, it almost always is the fuel pump. But you can test at various points to see where power stops, e.g., see if one side of the fuel shut-off switch has 12v going to it, if it does, the relay is fine. If one side of the fuel shutoff swithc has 12v and the other side does not, the shut-off switch is bad or needs to be reset. You can then work your way back to the fuel pump control module, etc.

^^ I generally test the fuel cutoff (inertia switch) by unplugging it and bridging the connections on the connector with a paper clip or some solid copper wire being careful to be sure that whatever I bridge it with isn't grounded to metal (lay it on the carpet). If the fuel pump still doesn't work, the fuse is good, and I've swapped the fuel pump relay with another relay that I can verify works (head light should be the same part #) then it's time for a fuel pump.

I've stripped out a 2000 Focus to race on our local oval track. Roll bar installed, race seat, 5 point harness etc, etc. Two things I need quick answers too (next race coming up soon).
#1. I need to install an electric fuel cut-off switch to kill the power to the fuel pump. The switch has to be located near the right rear window and accessible from the outside of the car and I'm pretty sure that's where the fuel pump wiring is. Do you know which wire I can splice into for this ??
#2. I need to get 4 degrees of camber in the front wheels and I can't see an easy way of doing this. Any thoughts on this ??
Any help is greatly appreciated !!! I'll have to post some pictures of the car when it's done.
