Hey all. new to this Focus car, son is looking at one, is there any year that one should stay away from? How are the motors? trans auto or manual?
I have been told 05 and up is where you should look to buy them from that pre 05 had a FORD motor in it!?!?!?!!?!?

Thanks

Well the 04 and up would be the duratec engine. take care of that and it will last a good long time.

2000-2004 SPI engine...stay FAR FAR FAR away from. They have an issue dropping valve seats, not something you would want to chance. Bulletproof other than that.

2000-2004 is also zetec engine. Very good engine as well.

GO with zetec or duratec, each have their little problems but anything will.

Transmissions are good in either to my knowledge, you'll get some more answers later on when more people see this. Poke around the site as well. Lots of information anywhere you look.

how are these cars as far as head issues, intake issues, etc. Assuming the car was taken care of even a little bit and not [:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)] with by some young kids that had no clue what they were doing.
Last fords I owned, well, ha ha ha, era of the ESCORT. ha ha ha, so needless to say I am leary of any Ford with a 4 popper.

Ok so those were made from 2002-2004. Special Vehicle Team, but I assume you looked all that up already. Some things to look for...see what has been done to it.

Specifically the timing belt, thats an expensive little job right there for the SVT...

Its becoming more of a collector car, they don't make parts for it anymore from what I understand...i think...

Repairs to it are pricey. How many miles are on the car?

The only head issues I am aware of would be on the SPI, which is not in the SVT.

It is a fast focus, has some power, so watch how old the owner is, what condition the car is in. Any modifications done to it performance wise...etc. It could all play a factor.

Good thing about it, is that it does have ABS and more airbags than the standard focus from that time, which will help with insurance should you go that route.

SVT was only done for those years? I was told that 05 and up focus cars did not have a FORD motor and 04 and older did and they were junk. Truth to this?

Yes those were the only years they were made from.

I'm not understanding what you mean from FORD motors 05 and up.

Zetecs were from 00-04
SPI were from 00-04
Duratec were from 04-present

The zetec and duratec are both good engines if that's what you want to know.

Being from cincy check for rust and things like that. See when general maintenance were done. Around 110,000 will sell from 2500-4500. Depending on what was done and condition.

How many miles and what color is it? Winter package?

I only looked at it for a moment and when the dude was talking about it I was sorta not paying attn, ha ha ha, I was there to pick up my car. I know the car was clean, not beat up at all, motor appeared orig, not fussed with and clean for a 140k or so mile motor. dude said he put the Xenon head lights in it, fancy looking ones made of glass.
the guy was prob in his late 20's, he was mang of the local chain repair shop. He seemed to know his stuff, impression of him was that he knew cars. I am 47, been around enough clowns to feel them out pretty well for what that is worth.

the 2001-2004 had great engines. the zetek lasts forever if you treat it right and maintain your preventative maintenance. dont wreck it and treat it right, she will treat you even better, i currently have a 2001 focus zx3 hatchback that has 227,000 miles on it with a rebuilt engine that is still going strong

Dude did make the point and showed it to me about the intake being on the back of the motor and exhaust mani being on the front. Pro/con to that set up?

there really arent any pros and cons to it, just a fact of whats easier to get to, the exhaust manifold is easier to get to in this case

how are the suspensions on these cars, SVT or not. Do they hold up well or are they made up of cheap bushings and lousy this and that?

The SVT suspension is actually pretty darn good. Others are good as well. Just not as low as the SVT is.

Where is this SVT that you are looking at? I might be able to give you some more insight on it. I live in the Cincinnati area also and know a lot of the dealerships.

I think when he said 05 and up is not a ford engine, he meant the duratec engine which is sort of a brother to mazdas mzr engines. Buts its still a ford engine and it was available 03-11. (and 12+ but it has new tech in it)

its a ford man, all fords are built cheap except for their F-150's. those never die. but everything else? they cheap out on. the zetek and duratec engines however are made to last. they've since steered away from that. however. i think the focus is a fantastic college car and a great first car. so you definitely wouldn't be doing yourself any wrong by purchasing any earlier model that has been taken car of

I thought the Marq and Vics held up well through the years. I had a few, other than a little smoke on take off, they ran well with FEW maint issues.
We had a 96 Tbird with the 4.6 it ran well, little issues and I sold it years ago to a guys I know, he says it is still running well with no big issues.
