Hey guys,

I have a friend with an 04 focus ZTS that has a reving issue.

I've Searched and searched for the issue and have seen from IACV to vac leak to Throttle body sticking.

Trying to narrow it down a bit more because all users with IACV problem say their car will die with a bad IACV, but mine does not, it will constantly high rev, but then the more I drive it, the further and further the RPMs go up to the point where if I don't shut it off, the RPMs will reach redline... Seriously...

Anyone have this issue and are there ways I can check to make sure it's not a vac leak / iacv / sticking throttle before I dive into fixing one?

Thanks all.

Check for vacuum leaks, and listen for hissing with the engine running. Or grab some carb and choke cleaner, and spray it near intake manifold gaskets, lines, and hoses.

Just stay away from sensors/electrical parts.

Think, bucko. You mention 'snaps shut' but you never drive the car by simply sliding your foot off the side of the pedal to let it snap shut by itself. You usually drop off slower than that. A throttle that snaps shut all day long can stick all day long when dropping off it lighter and slower.

PCV system is the worst for vac leaks, oily vapors aren't good for the rubber tubes. Under the manifold is a common problem area.

Cleaning the TB will at least stop the sticking at idle, and as amc mentioned it MIGHT be gunked up enough to cause problems at other throttle openings.

Both are good checks to do even if they aren't the final answer for this.

ooooo kay guiiize,

I took off the TB and cleaned it really well and was no longer sticking.... Still does the same shit. We also searched for any vac leaks and such.

BUT. I think we found the problem. The TPS sensor. When I unplug it, it drops down to a nice 800rpm idle, but still has the same issue of when driving, the revs DO NOT stop climbing. When I plug it in, the idle bumps to 2000 rpm and same issue while driving. I ordered a new TPS for $12 to see if it is the issue.

So far I've replace the battery, MAF, and now TPS.

I'll let you know what happens.
