Howdy all. Didn't see an 'introductions' forum or a reqiurement for a 'hello' post before jumping in with technical questions, so here goes both at the same time.
Not certain there is a good way to make this long story short, so I'm just going to string it all together.
I'm trying to help someone keep a 2004 focus ZX4 running as long as possible. Several sets of wheel bearings, exhaust repairs,, suspension repairs after bashing curbs, etc.
But now, there's a running problem that is kicking my ass. This car will be driving along just fine and then all of a sudden the power output of the engine drops to effectively nil. It doesn't die (sometimes it dies, but not always). It doesn't run rough or drop cylinders (although sometimes it kind of 'chugs' as though the condition is coming and going very rapidly. But the main symptom is hp output disappears. Typically a restart is required and then everything is fine again, until it happens again.
As stated in the title, it's not setting any codes or giving a check engine light, even as the problem is occurring. Which I find strange.
The fuel pump was noisy. It has been replaced this week along with the fuel filter.
The MAP sensor has been replaced, the throttle plate has been cleaned, and (thanks to old brittle plastic and rubber in very cold temperatures) the fuel rail pressure sensor has been replaced, too.
I've found one fellow who referenced a vehicle speed sensor issue that apparently can do something like this, but I don't recall the speedometer dropping out when it acts up. Another thread mentions a harmonic balancer that was the root of the problem.
Does anyone have any insight for a focus that just forgets how to make HP until a restart?
