I just bought an 03' SVT and I hear some grinding going into 2nd gear. I was wondering if anyone has switched out synchros from another getrag? If so, how did it go?

Have you bled the clutch?
That may solve the issue.
Also try changing the tranny fluid to the Ford honey colored fluid, or the Royal Purple fluid.

In my Contour SVT I just learned to be a little more deliberate in my shifts. Taking time in the shift helped a lot. Rushing the shift was just a problem I avoided.

Seemed Second gear either up or down was usually the problem gear. then third a bit too.

I had my tranny rebuilt due to the diff blowing up. The guy who did the work was a specialist in that tranny (did the racing ones for a lot of folks) he put in a limited slip differential, and replaced the synchros for me.
I got the old parts back... (And I could never have told you they were bad! So it really takes an expert to know.. The junk ones you put in may be way worse than the old ones.. If you cannot buy new ones.. I would forget swapping used ones!

Using synchros from another gearbox is a general no-no. It's standard practice to keep synchro collars and brake rings indexed and specific to their respective speed gears as to NOT mix them up even in the same gearbox... It would be a bad idea to swap one from another gearbox all together. The teeth on the brake ring develop a wear pattern to the teeth on the speed gear. It's not uncommon to have a crappy shift feel for several thousand miles after replacing synchros due to the time required for these wear patterns to develop again on the old speed gear teeth.

Considering the work involved, you are much better off just replacing all of them with new ones and doing a complete overhaul of the trans with new shims, bearings, cups and synchros.

I've never attempted to overhaul the MT285 so other than google I can't offer any good advice. I've done a few transaxle overhauls.... the MTX75 in the regular focus being BY FAR the easiest and simplest.... but the MT285 honestly looks like a bitch. If you do attempt it, keep us in the loop!

I feel you can change out used synchros and have done it before for my stuff , just need to keep th sizes the same
Like stated most of the time when you figure the cost of a used trans , taking the used synchro out you at what you could buy some new ones for

Thanks for feedback guys! Tom I look forward to getting this tranny figured out so I can pick up a tune for the SVT. I tracked down a few transmissions with less than 10,000 miles. So I'm looking to go down that route and have my current transmission be professionally rebuilt (beefed up) by an expert. Then I can drive it like I stole it!
