i have an 03 focus.a month after i got the car,everytime i would fill it up it would go to E and wouldnt go back up untill 20-40 miles later.......now when i fill up the neddle will go to E and the after i drive 10 miles it will change randomly every time i shut the car off and than back on......

If its random, it could be a loose connector on the top of the tank, its a bear to get to , though.

I'd also checked the fuel level sensor. It's basically a float attached to a potentiometer. When the fuel tank is full and the float is as high as it can be, there's a certain voltage. When the level drops, the voltage changes. The gas gauge is basically a voltmeter if you think about it that way.

Once you get to the top of the tank, remove this sensor and attach a voltmeter. As you move the float up and down, you should see a consistent voltage change. It's not uncommon for these to fail after a while. When they get rusty and corroded, you'll experience symptoms like you're having.

Quit topping up the tank so much...

You topped it up too much when you filled the tank.
I had that exact same problem, and once I stopped topping it up several times when filling, the problem stopped.
