If this has been posted before I apologize, but I'd just like to voice my shocked revelation that premium gas does indeed help the 2012. The last time I filled up it was with 87 (regular) gasoline at my local Sunoco. After driving around for about a week and a half I couldnt get the average to go above 27, and most times it stood around 26. It wasn't uncommon to see 25 either. This was a surprise to me given that I have the SFE package, drive 50 mph frequently, and that I don't have a lead foot. I looked in the owners manual and It said something like the lowest octane the engine can safely use is 87, and that "premium gasoline will increase performance". So about a week ago when I filled up again I chose to go all out and use Ultra (93 octane). I thought at the time it was overkill, but boy was I wrong. Even pulling out of the station I noticed immediately how much smoother the engine was, and how much less I had to depress the pedal to go anywhere. Now, driving the same exact way on the same roads I'm up to 32mpg. Shifting also seems smoother and when idling I cant feel anything. Given the difference I think I'll spend the extra $2.50 a tank and get the good stuff. Anyone else have similar experinces or do you all think I'm crazy[goofydrunk]

I totally believe that you could be correct. I remembered the today that my first few tanks of gas that came from the dealership which is higher quality gas usually, and sometimes (depending on the dealer) premium, got me an aveage of 27-31mpg in-city depending on my driving... But when I've filled it up with regular on my own dime I've averaged anywhere from 20-25mpg with the same habits for the most part... Kinda makes me wonder if my dealer uses premium and I've been robbing my car of the good stuff over a couple bucks a tank since they cut me off from the free stuff... Next tank I'm trying mid-grade, then premium after that and seeing if it really makes a difference after all. Thanks for sparking my interest, I'll let you know what I discover in my experiments.

Interesting to know that the focus can utilize premium gas. I didn't see anywhere that it says that it can or if it improves hp and tq? That'll be cool, it'll be just like late model mustangs, they can run both, just one has less power obviously.

Every dealer I been too will use the cheapest they can get away with. But that's just from my experience. Maybe your dealer is different. We all know how much different the service can be from one dealer to the next.

i know for a fact my old zetec engine liked premium fuel. and well, the svt engine requires it,lol. i dont think i'll change my habit of getting the good fuel with my next car either. kinda funny when you decide the mower needs to run on 93 as well because you dont want to pay twice for fuel in the same day on the same trip.

Haha. Total placebo. Sorry but, unless you drove until you ran completely out of gas and the car stopped on the side of the road, what you put in the tank hadn't come within 3 feet of the engine until a mile or two down the road.

And putting in a higher octane isn't going to make your car magically produce *that* much more power that you're going to notice a change in throttle response. In these engines, a couple of extra hp tops if any because I doubt these ECUs will adjust timing based on fuel quality.

I was thinking the same thing about the immediate difference.

Even my turbocharged Saab, that can adjust timing and boost based on the octane you fill up with, doesn't make an immediate difference. Is the 87 octane an ethanol mix my any chance?

Well if they used the cheapest possible then i need to find out where they get their cheap stuff because it truly did appear to provide better mileage results... Or, if it is in fact better gas, I need to still find out where they get it. Lol! Because the drop in mpg's did seem to show up once I introduced non-dealer gas to the car. Just curious... hence my willingness to test this theory.

The dealership I worked at used the gas station across the street... no secret source.

The dealership I worked for used the gas station across the street for diesel and premium but had it's own tank for all the non-diesel/premium cars. They used mid-grade in their tank up until gas hit $4.00/gal according to a service tech I chatted with once and then switched to regular to save some money. So the switch was fairly recent actually... Guess it really does depend on the dealer and the boss' choices.

That might be it.......

I've heard of regular being E10 and premium being E0 in some places...

On my recent long trip (500km) I filled up with premium fuel. I did not reset the trip info, but at the end of the trip the computer was telling me that I could still manage another 300km on the same tank of gas. I think 800km with the small gas tank is pretty good!

I avoid any ethanol blend in all my vehicles... ethanol is bad for your fuel system and it contains less energy than gasoline so it will always return lower fuel economy.

I have a little over 4,200 miles on my Focus right now and I've calculated better mileage with 93 octane fuel vs. 87 octane fuel. It only averages a 1-2mpg different but every little bit helps in my opinion. I'm going to keep testing it though to rule out the variable of the engine breaking in.

I've also noticed no power increase or better responsiveness with the premium fuel either, although I don't think I've actually floored my car since owning it.

The instruction manual explicitly states "higher octane fuel will result in increased performance". That pretty much settled it for me.

I use premium in my Focus as well. I think that's what the dealer filled it up with when I first got it. I put 87 in my first fill up and noticed a difference in acceleration after driving a few miles.

Went back to premium and it accelerates smoother and a little faster. I would never go over $35 when I had my '03 Taurus and would only get a little under 3/4 of a tank with 87.

$35 fills the Focus up to full so price isn't an issue. Of course I'll drop down if the price jumps up too much.

You know what, I completely agree. I literally just filled with premium for the first time this morning, and same thing as you, I noticed immediately. The engine sound was definitely more quiet, and it just felt smoother all around.

I used to put premium in my Escort GT and I noticed a difference in that car to. I have always been a fan of premium gas. I was just told the Focus would not need it, so I never did it till this morning.

if premiuum was only 2.50 more a tank here in windsor id use it. however with a price difference of roughly 10 cents per litre. its not the case.

I bought a bottle of octane booster. it wa 12 bucks and will last for 5 tanks. ill post my findings after i fill up, but so far my average economy is improving over what it usually is.
