2008 Ford Focus gets infusion of style

After years of being ignored in the compact segment, the 2008 Ford Focus is hoping to grab some attention with an all-new look. Our latest spy video and photos show various prototypes of the upcoming Ford Focus being tested on the streets of Michigan.

Unlike the European Ford Focus which now rides on an all-new platform, the 2008 Ford Focus in the U.S. will remain on its current chassis. Most of the changes for next year will be cosmetic, with a new three-bar grille up front similar to the larger Ford Fusion midsize sedan. A new character line down each side will give the profile a slightly different look while reshaped taillights spruce up the rear.

If there's any big news with this Focus refresh, it's the introduction of a new coupe body style similar to the old Ford Escort ZX2. Unlike the current Focus ZX3 hatchback, the new coupe has a traditional trunk, that cuts down on overall utility in favor of a sleeker profile. There's no word yet whether the coupe will be positioned as the high-performance model of the lineup, but the prototypes look as though they have higher-spec wheel and tire combinations than the sedans.

No changes under the hood are expected. Base models will most likely continue with the 130-horsepower 2.0-liter Duratec while upgraded models will get the 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 151 hp. These new models might also provide an opportunity for Ford to highlight the PZEV version of the 2.0-liter Duratec, which is one of the cleanest gas engines on the market.

Look for these new Focus models to make their official debut at the Detroit auto show in early January.

No hatch back means I wont being buy one, period :( Although I think the new fusion front end already decided that for me.

I just don't like the three bar look that the Fusion already carries along with the taillights. It just looks like a 4 Door Prelude to me. I just have to wait and see but at least it has a better profile than a ZX2.

i like that they finally got rid of the cheap pos moldings to give it a cleaner look, and finally it looks like itll have painted side mirrors all across the model line. I dont know, the little cheap things that ford does to save a little money annoys me. But yea, i wont be buying one. I want my focus as a hatch.

I'm a hatch 4 life kinda guy, but I think the coupe has potential. Not for utility, but for a bit of style.

The grille is a 2 bar, not 3, so it will be fusion-esque, think along the lines of BMW family lineage, or benz. You know its one as soon as you see it, without even knowing exactly what it is.

How do I know? Saw one today! ;)

THe front end is scaring the shit out of me. I love my sap fofo. The coupe could be cool though. Maybe swap out the bars for some mesh.

this will be my first and last focus. i love my car and really have nothing bad to say of it. but ford makes me sick. they give no go. no motor changes. that sucks. they save all the good stuff for the mazda side. but again trust me, i will drive my focus till the wheels fall off. then try to drive it some more. i do love it!

Can it sit any higher? I realize it's nothing that the aftermarket couldn't fix, but....jeeez. I don't see anything sleek about it. The new character line just makes the doors look that much bigger than they already do. Looks like a boring Toyota Corolla on steroids.

I bought my ZX3 because I wanted the hauling versatility in a small and fun commuter package without having to buy an SUV. Looks like Ford has now nixed that idea.

I don't know what Ford is thinking, this "Bold Moves" program they've initiated has brought on uglier, less fuel efficient, and somehow slower cars...in the words of 'The Vapors' "I think im turning Japanese, I think im turning Japanese, I really think so"

If by "bold moves" they mean "oh my god I can't believe they just got rid one of the best and unique style line of cars in the American market", then yes... mission accomplished. Sigh... this makes me depressed. But at the same time I'm not too distressed. The coupe model has the potential to look great, but at the same time it's no different than a mini-Fusion. It's going to look like any other car on the road. Say goodbye to originality.

When the time comes that I do need to get a new car (which hopefully won't be for a very long time), I'm probably going to look into the Toyota Yaris Liftback. I think it's right there beside the ZX3 with cool hatchback design, and you don't see too many of them on the roads either. Although... I'm still hoping that by then Ford will bring in the rumored new Focus platform (in 2010?) to America. I wouldn't hold my breath though.
