i have a 90 focus 1800 when the engine is at idle it tends to rise and then seems to settle if you flick the ignition of and on it seems to reset its self i have also noticed it is using a lot of petrol thanks for any help

Check all your air hoses for leaks, if nothing obvious spray something like easy start around hoses and listen for an increase in revs to locate leak.

If this is not the issue then it could be several other things. I would check the air mass sensor, you can sometime get away with cleaning them with carb cleaner, just be careful when removing. If cleaning doesn't solve it would be an idea if you could swap with a working one to check before you buy a replacement.

If I am correct with your engine then its two torx screws holding the sensor into the air intake pipe.

Theirs two ways:-

To clean unclip the wiring, remove the two torx screws and gently lift it from its casing, it is an easy operation, then just spray with carb cleaner and refit.

To replace You will probably get the whole unit which is even simpler as alls you need to do is remove the wiring connector and unscrew two jubilee clips and the unit will remove, fitting is reverse.

The fitting by the way is just after the air filter and will have a connector with five? wires going into it. It isn't a hard job at all.

If this is what's causing the problem then yes it will play a part in economy as it could be over fuelling.

Please don't rule out air leaks though, and their are other reasons that could explain you symptoms I am just pointing out the obvious ones and also the easiest to DIY
