Anyone here live near Durango or Wolf Creek? I'm going to be making a couple of snowboarding trips up there this season, and was hoping for some help. I absolutely love Durango, but have been there 2-3 times a year for the past 8 years or so. I want to try Wolf Creek, but have heard mixed reviews. How does WOlf Creek stack up? I know they are a POW lovers dream, but what about the resort and area?

Also, does anyone know of cheap lodging/tickets for the area? I'm always looking for a deal.

I'm also prepping the fofo for the trip, mostly high desert on the way up, but what about snowy conditions...are there any roads to watch out for? Thanks !!!

Ive lived here my whole life and ive never gone to durango for snowboarding or anytihng like that, i usually end up in Powderhorn lol, but it's still fun. Depending on where you're going if you're spending time checking out other places here, just watch out for Vail Pass, it gets closed quite a bit in the winter and wont let you through w/o chains, and in alot of cases not at all.

Thanks jo,
I'd love to get back up to Denver area sometime this winter. I went to Keystone a while back and loved it. unfortunatly it is a little to far to drive and lodging, tickets, and car rental are too much for me to handle. we have a trip planned on Jan1-4 to Durango area, and with the current conditions we are probably going to end up at Wolf Creek.

There is also Purgatory(Now known as Durango Mountain[thumbd] ) I hate that they changed the name. It's just 25 miles north of Durango on U.S. 550. here's their website:

That's what I meant by durango. I've been to both Purg and DMR [clap] and am excited to see the new outdoor pool and hotel. They've been working on it for so long now. We have another trip planned there for Jan 21-25. It's awesome, they come down to Phoenix once a year and sell cheap ass lift tickets. 8 pack for $200 (student)!!!

Oh, sorry. Most locals still always call it Purgatory.

Wolf Creek is quite a hump from Durango, about 75 miles. It's not a fun drive when the weather is bad. Here's the Wolf Creek Ski area's website page about lodging in Pagosa:

http://www.wolfcreekski.com/motel-west.asp

I've stayed at the America's Best Value High Country Lodge. It's the closest to the ski area, but it's expensive and out in the middle of nowhere. The Econo Lodge in Pagosa is nice and not bad price-wise. The Econo Lodge is also close to a grocery store, shopping, restaurants, and liquor stores.

Wolf Creek is where massive snow falls, they are expecting three feet in the next two days. This is why getting to Wolf Creek can be an adventure. The ski area is just past the summit of the pass. If you are not used to driving mountain passes in Winter conditions, it will be quite an experience. However, if the sun is out, the pass is not too bad. They do a great job clearing it.

I saw that the skies have open and the snow is falling! That's awesome! Thanks for the info on Wolf Creek. The site that I visit for snow reports said that it is only 50 miles from Durango. I guess we'll see by Friday when the snow settles where we are headed. Probably stick with Durango for this trip since I know it so well, but Jan 21-25 we'll be back up there with a truck and probably brave the trip to Wolf Creek.

And here's an update...

Another major storm has dropped an additional 18 inches of snow on Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort. In just three days Purgatory has received over 30 inches and the snow is still falling.

The National Weather Service is predicting a third storm to follow later this week and the winter weather advisory has predicted heavy snow through Thursday with accumulations ranging from 2-3 feet.

Durango Mountain Resort has received nearly three feet of snow in the past week.

Purgatory has recieved 18" in the past 24 hrs. They currently have a 54" base. Wolf Creek has received over two feet in the past 24 hrs. They now have an 85" base!

It is still snowing at both mountains.

The trip was a blast! Friday it was really sunny and warm with some slush and ice, but still lots of powder pockets. Then it snowed most of the night and Saturday was one of the best days that I have had in years! I don't know if people were scarred off by the snow or what, but there were no lines on the backside. There was 6-8 inches of powder on most all of the runs and the snow kept coming down for the entire day! never made it to telluride or wolf creek because we had so much fun at Purg.

I'll be back on the 22nd-25th if anyone in that area can make it, let's hit the slopes!

Wish I could join you. Too far away, and I can't ski anymore. Bad back and a really bad knee.

Glad you had a blast. I always liked Purgatory.
