I copied this from another forum, so not sure if it is still valid or not but might be a starting point:
First and most important. Never talk to live personnel at the railroad! Only use automated phone system. If it attempts to transfer you to a live person please hang up. The railcar information we are provided is given as a courtesy and if we call live personnel we may lose the access and ability to track.
1. Call the CSX 1-800-235-2352
2. When prompted for location or weight, press "1" on your phone for location.
3. When prompted for the car initials, say CN (or whatever initials you have) then wait for the next prompt.
4. When prompted for the car number, say what the number is
5. When prompted for next car say DONE.
6. That's it; enjoy your updated status report.

Try this, I verified that it goes to an automated system:
dial 1-877-ShipCSX (1-877-744-7279), options 5 - 3
Then:
2. When prompted for location or weight, press "1" on your phone for location.
3. When prompted for the car initials, say CN (or whatever initials you have) then wait for the next prompt.
4. When prompted for the car number, say 907048 (or whatever your number is)
5. When prompted for next car say DONE.
6. That's it; enjoy your updated status report.

I went all the way to: When prompted for location or weight, press "1" on your phone for location.
I dont have any real information to put it or I would have tried it completely.
I did not get prompted for a customer id or pin to that point.
care to try it with this number:

You must be doing it wrong/entering the wrong prompts because I literally just did it and it didn't ask me for that?...Not having luck with this
When I tell it I don't have user ID it sends me to a live person.
Anyone else having luck?

not sure exactly, but if you have the car's initials and numbers, you can find out where it is (maybe even that info is given when you call in too)
The car's initials and numbers? I have the VIN and Sticker and it was built Wednesday. Where do I find these "initials and numbers" at?

top middle of the sticker in the area of the vehicle description.
also, they are in your VIN (the last letters and numbers following it)

Yeah, those are the right letters. That probably means your car isn't on the rail yet...
Are you sure? Mine has no status either. Tried one that's already in dealer's lot. No status either.

I'm pretty sure it would tell you if the number was invalid.

And if it's in a dealer's lot, I'm sure it wouldn't be on the rail tracking anymore anyways....

I doubt rail tracking would tell you anything before it's loaded or after its unloaded. When you order something online and they give you a tracking number you may not get any info until after they actually pick it up.
