So i recently wrecked a 2001 zx3 and bought a 2002 zx3. Both with a 5 speed manual. I wanted the power options and cruise control since the new car didnt have it but the old one did. So, i replaced all the wiring from my old car, to the new one. So now i have a 2002 ford focus zx3 with 2001 wiring, doors, ecu, and cruise control module and motor. Everythings plugged in, as far as i can tell, and the power windows, mirrors, and locks all work. However, the cruise control doesnt. I hit on, then set, and nothing. No lights, no cruise. I did have to solder the motor back on, but seemed right when i was done. Any ideas anyone?

Holy cow! That is a ton of work (!!) and so many different things could be screwed up or missed during that modification work.

Both cars had (or did not have) a steering wheel with cruise control (CC) switches for cruise control?

Let us pretend that you have a (never modified) 2002 and nothing is wrong EXCEPT for cruise control. Now we can ask why CC is not working...?

CC can STOP working when the tail lights are blown or screwed-up. CC can also stop working when the hatch wiring is messed-up from the hatch door -TO- the car frame. You need to inspect this wiring inside the umbilical rubber boot.

Damaged wiring inside this rubber boot can prevent CC from working.

Lastly, do you have 2001/2002 Focus wiring diagrams? -good luck.

Let us pretend that you have a (never modified) 2002 and nothing is wrong EXCEPT for cruise control. Now we can ask why CC is not working...?

The car didnt have cruise control before, so it had no buttons. But, when i did the wiring swap, I also swapped the steering column so I can have tilt, and then I put on my old wheel with the buttons. I even bought new buttons to see if they were the issue. Also, I checked the wiring in the boot before, and it seemed fine. And all the tail lights work.

did you replace the clock spring from the old to the new?, are there any leds in the top brake light as this can stop it from working, i had this problem when i fitted cruise to my uk 1.6 resolved it by adding a small 1.5w bulb into the wiring in the brake light, also check the brake pedal switches and the clutch pedal switch, you can also check to see if the switches are working by holding the on button while turning the ignition on you should see the cruise illumination on the dash light up for a second and with every other button on the switches it will be the same,

this is the wiring for that comes with cruise control kits, but its virtually the same

I did install an aftermarket 3rd led brakelight, but i already had that in my old car and it worked fine. All the leds light up. Ill have to give the switch test a try. Also, i thought it was the brake and clutch switchs at first, so I've already replaced those as well.

So let me make sure I understand. You wired in another light behind your 3rd brake light to increase resistance?

yes just a small bulb it is what i had to hand and to test and this worked fine from 2009 until i got rid of the car in 2015, from another forum when i was trying to figure out what the problem was

some voltages at the servo connector with just the ignition on
Pin 1 11.7v
Pin 3 11.9v
Pin 4 4.0v
Pin 5 8.5v
Pin 7 12.7v with and without the steering column connector
Pin 9 12.7v

pin 4 should actually be at 0v when the brake is not pressed, this is the problem with led's as it still lets a small amount of current through, so thinking that the brake is being pressed so not to engage it

I have installed T10 LED lights in my 3rd brake lights and have never had a problem in either my 01 ZX3 or my 04 ZX5 SVT

The opinions and info below is biased towards my 2004 car configuration.

This is a tricky subject: Tail lights & High mounted brake lights (HMBL) verses CC working properly.

The exact wiring configuration of "brake lights verses CC" changes based on:
(1) auto verses manual trans
(2) 3-door and wagon verses sedan
3-door & Wagon - CC is dependent on the circuit ground provided by the HMBL
Sedan - CC relies on the three circuit grounds provided by the HMBL and the left and right rear brake light bulbs.

Understanding or reviewing how the brake lights can impact CC requires reviewing at least 2 different wiring diagrams.
(1) Vehicle Speed Control
(2) Turn/Stop/Hazard

Blue = I agree
Red = I do not agree

The OEM incandescent bulbs allow a direct path to electrical ground (thru the bulb filament). The CC Module is dependent on using and "sensing" this ground path provided via the bulb filament. Other Modules also use this ground provided via the bulb filament/s (ABS and PCM). LED's block this direct path to ground, and does NOT allow a small amount of current to pass thru. The LED's will allow current to flow only after x-amount of potential (voltage) is applied.

That 2w panel bulb actually reduced the resistance AND/OR restored the needed direct path to ground via the bulb filament of the 2w panel bulb. I think that was a great idea & a great way to make the CC system happy again, and also allows you to use LED's for the HMBL. If your CC ever stops working, you will need to replace that 2w bulb.

Strange. IIRC that is not the norm. Did you by chance install a HMBL load resistor also? Maybe I do not understand this "CC conflict with LED's" as well as I thought I did? Maybe the exact type of LED's you used are the answer? or maybe some manual trans 3-door/wagon cars have an immunity (circuit) to the CC conflict of HMBL LED's...?

What ever it is, the HMBL LED's can cause CC to fail on the Focus and other car types too.

Yep both have cruse control. And both cars have full function of CC before and after the LED's. I can post the type of bulbs but were some high rated ones off Amazon.

OK. And please do that. I will buy that type, that you bought, as soon as I need to replace my OEM HMBL bulbs. I have never checked to see exactly how many of my original(?) HMBL bulbs are/are not working. I will do that soon. I bought this 2004 car in 2013 and maybe some were replaced previously.

I like the idea of moving from incandescent to LED for the HMBL. If you remember, how many bulb slots are on the HMBL? 6? 8? 10? 1000?

Hope that the fixture is not totally melted there, the issue I've seen is that the incandescent bulbs have too much heat and pulling the assembly resulted in lots of crumbling/broken parts that are really not fit to reinstall again.

Now you guys got me wondering if my cruise works on an earlier model, I use it so rarely it may not and I wouldn't know it. I changed one car to an LED light there that was already rigged for 12 volt. Car is down now for long term maintenance so I can't tell.

The 4 door at least to '05 thinking; mine has 5 bulb positions there. The replacement one I bought did not say '02 but it fit perfectly.

Use CC in my SVT multiple times a day and have the rear brake bar swapped out with these. Only thing I had to do was take apart the reflector also out of the rear red housing and install the bulbs into the strip through the reflector. The LED's are just a hair larger total outside diameter and they would not go through the hols in the reflector.

Cruise needs brake pedal switches, a module under the hood, and a separate cable to the throttle to work.
