I have burned 2 coil packs on the 2001 Zetec. MX5 manual.

Test shows the computer is bad.
How to best determine that it is bad?

If I replace the computer will I have to have the dealer reprogram computer to match my key?

Used computers are available

How do I find the best computer match?

Odd your going through coils so much

What is happening that they are sayng your ECU is bad just the coils going out "

Yes you will have to have the PATS / Keys reset from your dealer to change the ECU

There is a cose on the ECU that salvage yards use , if you get me a picture of the sticker on your ECU I will tell you which # it is , if you shop around you can find the ECU use for 50-100.00

I have tried several tests. It is in a shop. Burned two wires that overheated on the EGR tube. I think that ground short burned the coils 1 & 2. Found the wires taped them up. Tried 3rd coil but no start like it did for coil # 2. One tester says it must be ECM. We need to get more tests done. One specialist said the car is not worth fixing. I hope he was wrong.

Ignition fuse? If the odometer is not reading [-------] then the ECU fuse is still good, but it's hard to tell about the ECU.

You're having a crank but not start issue right? Yeah, if someone went throwing parts at the car, it probably wouldn't be worth keeping.

Do you have -------- on the Odo ? Thats mostly for the PATS

Have you checked the crank sensor , do you have spark and do you have fuel in the cyl

I have burned two coil packs, overheated and cracked in bottom and smelled bad. I think the problem is still wiring in the harness.

Arty you do a great job...and i will try to make some test. thanks a lot.

Final report. Wires melted and grounded short to cause coil pack overheating and burn out. Working with the harness broke more wires and found corroded connections.

Final solution: went to local salvage yard, called Pull-A-Part. Cut part of the harness from a 2001 Focus with coil and MAS connectors attached and was used to connect wiring and by pass burned sections. $5.00 wire Problem solved. Up and running great. This was beyond me so a local garage put it all together with my offer of a section of the harness.
