Why does my 2012 focus ti hb with 50,000 miles on it make a chattering grinding sound when shifting gears? I took it to the dealer to look at the stuttering/lurching problem, and also this sound. They reprogrammed PCM and TCM, but also say there is no problem. The grinding sound is embarrassing, when I give people rides in my car they say things like "dude what wrong with your car". Is this really as good as it gets? Because this sucks.

I just took mine in for the same thing and they fixed it. I don't know what kind of warranty you have but they need to take a look at it. They replaced the 2 clutches.. the cracking and jumping when shifting from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 is gone.

Does it sound like assorted nuts and bolts being shaken in a paint can? If so, then you're experiencing clutch chatter. While not ideal, and sometimes indicative of larger clutch problems, most of us have it to some degree. It's best heard when driving between two buildings/under an overpass with the windows down.

Basically, the noise is beings caused be the engagement of one of the clutches, and because that action is computer controlled it's not really that smooth of a process. It's most noticeable when doing "soft" gear changes (i.e. at low speeds or gradual acceleration).

The lurching problem is not as fun but again not necessarily an issue that can be easily fixed because so many experience it to some degree.

Negative Nancy^ ^ ^ I'm sure it will with this beautiful new 2 clutch electronic transmission that is oh so fuel efficient. At least now it doesn't make any noise and has smooth gear transition.

Either way you're going to hear these noises with this system. Just like a manual transmission but should not be loud and unbearable to listen to like mine was. The guy at Ford tried to make me feel better by saying all the new Porche are using this system.

Have you considered seeking a second opinion? You can find all the dealers in your area by ZIP here: Dealer Locate.

I have the same issue and I have been to the dealer 3 times since I got my car. However, I always told them I was 100% sure it was from suspension since the noise would be louder when turning. But after reading more on this site and seeing post like this one, I'm 100% sure that the noise is the clutch :/ So probably another trip to the dealer will be needed. Also jtby22, I know what you mean with your friends/passengers. Most of us have bought newer cars and mine makes "noises." Don't get me wrong, I like the car but would like to get rid of the noises. They do like the mgps I get compared to their cars and the interior.

When you have the next appointment set up, please let me know. I'll look into some additional options.

Well I might give that a try. It took weeks to get an appt with my dealer to have them take a look, and they rescheduled multiple times. When they finally did take it they still did not have time the first day so they gave me a rental focus SE. Which ran great, nice and smooth and quite, unlike my car.
