Hey Guys I have a 2000 Zx3 Ford Focus. My locking system just went down a month ago. I have replaced the fuse and the fuse keeps on going in a few minutes or seconds. It does burn out faster when the car is running.

Now with the fuse fried. The Rear hatch seems to unlock when I start the vehicle. I disconnected both doors and played with the locks with a new fuse installed. I had a suspicion the right door was not working correctly so I took it apart and really didn't find much of anything wrong. I tried it with the right door disconnected and no problems, and than plugged it back in. They both worked good. I turned the car on and the fuse fried.

I tried to release the trunk hatch and found the horn would sound when I did that, and than I could not activate the locks, but the fuse wasn't fried. I also noticed the left signal light would go on when I tried to unlock the trunk. Very odd.

I finnaly disconnected the rear hatch and well the fuse blew Immediatley when I used the locks.

I am very puzzled at whats going on with this car and figured I would post here and see what you all had to say.

The dealers supposedly have a diagnostic tester specifically for the Central Locking System/ Central Security Module, due to its complexity.

Supposedly, there's also a built in self test for the 2000 central locking/central security system -- I've never tried it, but here's what the book says to do:

Ignition OFF
Operate one of the door light switches 6 times within 8 seconds to activate self test
The horn will sound and the hazard lights will flash once to acknowledge.
The horn will sound and the hazard lights will flash every time a door, hood, or liftgate is opened.
If the doors are double-locked, and interior scanning is installed, the signal will occur when something is moved within the passenger compartment.

I supposed the self test is terminated if the car is started, but the instructions don't really say anything.

Thank you very much for that. Does the Disgnostic Self test tell you what the problem is when it is finnished?

Check the How-To's.. what FocusDog mentioned is similar to turning ON/OFF the central locking feature. My car was so rushed through the assembly line that the feature was turned off when I got it. I followed the How-To on this site and turned it on. It might save you some fuses to turn it off for now until you can get to a Ford dealer to figure out what is causing the malfunction.

If I'm not mistaken, there is no powerless back up to the latch lock mechanisms in the Focus, so if the system goes out and the doors are locked--- you could be screwed.

As far as I know, self test just acknowledges that the door switches work by flashing the lights and honking the horn so you can narrow down which door/hatch is involved in the problem. I guess in a roundabout way, it tests the switches and the module's ability to interpret the switches.

OKay sounds good. Now I suppose it won't work if the fuse is broken..

central locking system

hi can anyone help me i have bought a ford focus with two keys one fob and one normal key. the fob key unlocks the car when you put the key in the door, but it does not work when the button is pressed and doesnt start the car either, the lights on the dash come on and that is it. i have tried doing the on off tip 6-8 times , changed the battery in the fob and nothing works
i will be grateful for any tips and hints.

If by "normal key" you mean one like you'd get from the hardware store, it will never start the vehicle. There is a microchip in Focus keys, and a sensor ring around the ignition lock that picks up the key code. The code in your key's chip is stored in the in the vehicle's pcm. If you try to start the vehicle with a key it doesn't recognize, nothing happens.

You can buy extra chip keys and program them yourself. The procedure is outlined in your owners manual.

my brother has a focus as well the same. when we swap mote heads on top of the keys he can program it to his focus but i cant to mine.

You can only program more fobs IF you have two good fobs

This is to prevent thieving parking attendants from making a fob for themselves

Otherwise is off to the dealer or super locksmith that has the electronic tooling
