i have a 02 SVTF with FULL winter package. im scepticle about plugging in the block heater due to my luck with my previous vehicles and fire.

my question is, how many people actually use there block heaters in the winter time, and does it actually help in the morning after the car is sitting and freezing all night???
also, does anyone know if it cycles the coolant, or just keeps the block itself toasty warm.

From what I was told (not familure with the block heater in anyway) you are NOT supposed to plug the heater in in the morning, its possible to damage the car I belive. You are supposed to plug the car in after you have driven it, so lets say you get off work at 6pm plug in the car and you'll be set in the morning.

Take that as you want its just what heard, I'll be watching this thread so I can figure out a definate answer myself.

i leave my house to get to work at 7:30, i work at 8:00. so my thought process was to get home at night, whenever that is, and just plug it in. let it sit, and if i need to go anywhere, just unplug, then re-plug. wake up in the am, unplug and go.

i wanted to know if this is how it works. or like you said faster than u, plug it in for a few HRs.

on most cars you can leave them overnight with no problem, I cant say its the same for the fofo though, as I'm not sure. I had a jeep in canada with a block heater and I would plug it in at night before bed, pull it off in the morning and hit the road. My brother has one on his F250 and also runs it overnight.

There is no problem with leaving the car plugged in overnight, if you don't mind paying for the extra electricity it uses. My car is parked in my garage all the time, and I still plug it in whan it gets below 20 degrees. It makes starting much easier, and you get heat much sooner.

Same here I leave it overnight (6pm to 6am) and so far I haven't have a problem (this is my second winter with the car)...I start plugging the car when the temperature gets in the 30s...It helps a lot at start up...By the way mine stays on the driveway...

This is an interesting thread. I have used mine for 2yrs now, plug it in at night and unplug in the AM....instant heat and no high idle. The thing is though, if it's suppose to be used at 5 degrees or below to "make a difference", then why does my temp guage show an engine that is 1/4 of the way to temp when I fire it up? It makes a difference to me.

There's no set guideline to when you can or can't use it. It uses about as much power as a light bulb and there's no problem leaving it plugged in overnight. I used it all last winter.

It's located in between the hood latch and the air intake(snorkel), black fiber covered cord. I'd show a pic, but for some reason I can't get pics to load on this site......ugh.
