Slowing down, in gear, clutch engaged; that is engine braking.

If it's an actual backfire, an injector may be leaking.
Hows it start?
Any recent changes in MPG's?

All svt's have some sort of a "backfire" to them. If you have and exhaust or off road pipe they become much louder and more noticeable. In colder weather during warm up mine will be extremely loud at times.

Exhaust pop!
And if you have a tune, it will likely be louder than stock.

YUP! The ORP makes it sound like a backfire but it is just unburned fuel entering a chamber with O2 in it and combusting. A FULL ON Backfire is likely a leaky injector or a sign of a timing issue.
