Anyone running anything particular for their axles/CV's for their racing activities? Running into issues with off the shelf offerings coming apart.....

Backstory:
Last year ran OEM Ford axles/CV's no problems, but one started clicking/binding (it was original to the car 166k on it..) so I replaced it with something off the new parts shelf.

Just came back from racing at Thompson, CT putting 200+ laps on the new axle, no issues running, till I went to bleed the brakes this morning for day two and found that the boot split, CV dry and not worth risking. When i installed that axle I thought the boot was alittle stretched, unlike the OEM, but didn't think much of it, figured that's why it split.

After lots of hunting, finally find another new one that fits (good god are some of them crap), get everything back together, get on track just in time for start, two turns, boom CV pulls right out, we're done.

I have extended the LCA's to achieve the camber we needed, so I'm guessing, due to that, I may need a longer axle. I extended them because I'm trying to keep our penalty laps down so I didn't want to use camber plates, but now I'm weighing plates with the cost of a custom extended axle. The differences in how each axle/CV combo ran just mystifies me... one is fine, one the boot craps and the wear is right at the end of the carrier, but not out still ok, next one blows right up immediately... so just seeing if anyone else had dealt with this sort of fun!

They let you extend the A-arms, but camber plates aren't allowed? Do they allow aftermarket A-arms?

How much did u extend the lca? The first thing we do is take the boot off and inspect and repack the axles, both ends. Have had good luck with empi units. Get a band clamp tool and reclamp after you repack with syn grease. Three years on one set of axles, but we repack and inspect every set.

So in Lemons if you can make it, it in most cases won't count against you lapwise, it's all about how much your go fast parts cost, so with extending the lca I essentially made new ballpoint mounts that extend and lower them roughly an inch each side, so no issue, but as soon as they start seeing shiney bits like camber plates they poke around more or give you penalty laps. I notched the towers and could only add maybe 1 degree of camber till I did the extended lca, then got the 3.25 degrees we wanted total.

Msperper, at least in the short term I'm going to try that, pulling them completely apart lube the cap out of them, going to get some measurements too. I'm about 90% sure I extended them an inch or so, but I'll confirm tonight, didn't have an issue with that oem axle so it was info I pushed out of my brain lol once it "worked"

The MKIII axles for the MTX-75 are an inch longer than the MKI, but the outside end splines are different. I am not sure about the internal specs of the outer CV joints, but it might be possible to use the MKIII axles with the outer splined end of a MKI I axle??? As you can see in this photo, the extra length is in the outer half of the axle shaft

Now that's some good info to know viper!!! I'm hitting the junk yard this weekend to pull apart a bunch of mtx-75 axles from various cars to compare, I'll def check splines although anyone know if drivers and passenger side axles themselves are the same length between cvs?

SO! Fun fact, in ford's infinite wisdom they made the drivers and passenger side axles between the cvs different lengths.... in my favor! Had a spare passenger side laying around, popped off cvs... almost an inch longer, drivers side boom right on. Still need to test, but appears to be the solution to my problem. Still need to do something with the passenger side (although it hasn't blown yet) so will still be on a junkyard search this weekend to see what I can do for that, but half the issue solved hopefully!

So info for the masses that can come up in a search.

I spent a good day at the junk yard pulling axles of anything that would be close to see if anything was close to the focus.... no go on ANYTHING, which is good to know, but depressing. This check was on the axles themselves, obviously the driving splines/hubs are different, trans end different etc, this check was on the axle to CV splines.

Mk III focus, Contour, Fusion, Escape, Mazda, each one a different CV spline....perhaps I missed something, but I yanked everything I could get my hands on. Now at least one appeared to not be a factory axle since it didn't have the oozy lithium in it, instead aftermarket Moly grease, but either way found absolutely nothing that a CV from our reman nor our OEM would fit on so I think I'm SOL atleast on the passenger side for now. Now passenger side has not grenaded yet and it is longer, so perhaps its ok, but i need to pull and inspect it either way.

So far the frankenaxle I made taking a passenger side axle and putting the driver's side CV cup on it has worked! Ran a whole weekend at NH (16 hours) with zero problems with the axle. That being said we were pumping trans lube out the whole time as the axle letting go punched the slightest crack in the trans case, so we went through 6 quarts of honey the whole weekend. Passenger side oem is still going strong, so until that let's go I'm crossing my fingers. If i continue to run into issues I will most likely swap over to mkiii front gear like pappy did and be done with it, but don't want to swap everything a 3rd time yet.

Currently in the middle of rebuilding that trans with another case and an lsd (shhhh)
