Fellow Fanatics,

Can I use 2000 manual transmission axles in my 2003 automatic?

Felix,

Thanks for the info, just trying to save a few bucks. Now I have to sell the old ones to afford the new ones.

Axle Shafts

Paul1958,

The 2000 had the Zetec 2.0 DOHC. My current car (2003 ZX3) has the same engine.

My understanding is that the axle differences had to do with the two different manual transmissions used. The SPI (CVH) engine used the IB5 manual trans which takes axle shafts with 23 slines. The Zetec engine used the MTX75 trans which takes axle shafts with 26 splines. The 4F27E auto trans was used with both engines and takes axles with 26 splines but Im not sure if the seal interface and/or length is the same as on the MTX75. Some replacement part listings show compatibility MTX75 to 4F27E and some dont. Ford listings do NOT show compatibility ATX to MTX.

I think the only way to be certain would be to remove the axles from your 03 and closely compare them to the ones you have from your 00. Id like to see that myself.

Good luck

Ford does some strange things with these CV axles. I'm going to do a AT to MT conversion on my 2012 and there was a midyear change to the CV axles on the MT versions. My daughter already has a 2012 with a 5-speed (MTX75) but it is the earlier variant. My 2012 is the later variant so even after the swap, my MT will be a bit different from hers. The doner MTX75 for my swap is coming from a 2013. I thought that was the safe bet because I wasn't sure if there was any difference in the length or the spline configuration at the hub end of the axle. The salvage yard is going to throw in the CV axles for cheap so although I was originally planning on buying them new, I'm now thinking that I'll just try these and see how it goes since they are pretty pricey to buy new.

Axle Shafts

All,

I went to the parts store and did comparisons on the short shaft (driver side). Everything was the same dimension except the manual shaft is 2 inches longer than the automatic. I still need to sell my old shafts for the manual to be able to buy the automatic shafts. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Axle Shafts

All,

After the comparison at the parts store, I checked on-line and lo and behold the axle shaft part numbers are the same for both sides for the 2000 with a manual and for the 2003 with an automatic. I will not have to sell the old shafts and can use them for my current car. Wish me luck.
