if i try to shift my atx out of park it will not shift applying the brake and squeezing the button. i have to press she shift release button under the little plastic cover..what causes this?

The switch that activates the shifter release when you press the brake pedal might be bad.

I agree with the bad shift lock. You can remove it but it is a safty feature.

Take the center console out and look at the mechanism.

Is that triggered by the brake light switch? Are your brake lights working?
