Aluminum thermostat housing for SVT?

4078 Views 13 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  hEaT
I've got the infamous thermostat housing leak from the plug at the bottom of the housing. What's the current wisdom on replacing it? I see the CFM kit (for $151 w/o thermostat). But searching on-line I also find this aluminum housing:

$142 including the screw-in temperature sensor and thermostat.

Anyone have any experience with this part or the vendor?

Massive is very good. Much more reliable than CFM imho.
I have one. It is a little rough looking and will need to be massaged to meet my show car standards, but it will work. Do not expect a high or medium high end part. It is definitely Medium low end quality. I am surprised Massive let this quality slide. The hose ends are not really round and the casting is really rough. Hope this helps.
My engine bay isn't going to win any awards - I'm happy if it 1) doesn't leak, and 2) stays that way for the life of the car. I can deal with cleanup up messy castings, but I don't want something that's going to fail. Non-round hose ends are worrying, though not a show-stopper.
You can piece the "CFM" conversion by looking up 2000 Contour (w / thread in sensor) on Rock Auto. (Might need to go to the hardware store for the little NPT plug, I cant remember.) They made the older Contour housing out of better materials.
Its mostly issues with the stock housing , I would just replace the housing with a OEM replacement

They now make them from the same plastic as the rest.

I just replaced the housing on my 04 svt with a plastic replacement. The original lasted 16 years.

Just to be clear I was not dissing the plastic housing units - they are fine and can last a very long time. Ive replaced a few and always use a Motorcraft replacement housing. They usually eventually fail when the thin wall inboard of where the o-ring sits between the housing and the head disintegrates causing the housing to leak. What I was taking issue with was that the currently available housings sold to back fit the older 'Contour' Zetec engines with the screw in sensors are not 'better material' as stated above.

The thermostat housing usually fails due to oil from a leaky valve cover running down the head. The oil soaks the thermostat o ring causing it too swell and break the housing. I've never been a fan of the thermoplastic design. That being said, the aluminum housing is too pricey for what it does.
Thanks for the info everyone. Having just done the timing belt and replaced the valve cover gasket I don't expect any oil leaks soon. So it sounds like the Motorcraft replacment is the way to go (given the rust that car has and will gain here in Upstate NY I'm planning on having this car forever). Question: Rock Auto has one with or without "special vehicle package". Are they referring to the SVT as the "special vehicle package"? Anyone know which part number is the correct one for the SVT? I'm guessing the more expensive one is for the SVT (and it looks right, from what I can tell in the pictures).

Yes. With. The svt has a temp sensor on the thermostat housing. Additionally, the svt has a metal plug on the bottom. Replace the o ring for the metal plug. . I used a faucet o ring from a kit I have.
I know this is an older thread but I just put a brand new massive speed unit on mine and it leaks like a sieve between the head and the housing, o-ring must be too small but either way I am not impressed with how much it was..

I believe mine is leaking too - Will find out more tomorrow when I swap it out. Slow leak and can smell burning coolant, but nothing visible. The secondary sensor hole on the bottom I know needs to be chased, but stopped leaking as much as it was after tightening the plug more (still might be weeping though). Like you, not really happy with it.
