My 2004 Focus ZX5 clunks when I start it. And, when I accelerate under load, I hear this roar, kind of grinding sound from around where the alternator is near the firewall. If I'm in gear and shift to neutral, and then rev. the engine, you don't hear the grinding. Only the motor rev. The sound only happens under load. Also, when idling, I hear what sound like a clunking also from the alternator. All electronics in the car work fine.

Could very well be a motor mount. When the pass side mount went bad on mine, it sounded like a grinding accessory belt driven component going bad.

Mine was making a noise like crinkling plastic almost grinding like. It is my oil pump going out. Get the oil pressure tested.

How many miles are on the car?
