Ordered a needed fuel pump (only, no module) for a '98 Contour zetec, or the Spectra SP1113 at rock auto and $37. It appears to be MUCH closer to the early module Focus pump than the late pump which only fits the late module and tends to F/U when used in the early ones. The only difference appears to be the bottom pump bleed baffling which is a bit different, and matching a early Focus pump bottom rubber to it still appears to work fine.

The only problem I see is that the pump kit comes with 3 bottom rubber insulators that do NOT work with the pump itself, you pretty much need an original rubber or the ability to cobble up something that works in its' place. Out of those 3 they didn't fit the needs of the Contour either, so pump is fine and matched but no new bottom rubber in the kit to work with it on either car.

Well, what do we expect in a world like todays' where we say two diametrically opposed things in the same sentence then insist like an idiot that the world didn't understand our completely incompetent use of english?

Oh no, you CLEARLY misunderstood that.

For those absolutely on a dire budget and needing a pump for an early Focus, if your rubber is good you can go there without the entire module.

After looking at this closer I have realized that I missed one thing. It's that the fuel pump output nozzle is spaced slightly inboard more on the Contour pump than the Focus one and although only one of about 5-6 differences that the late focus pump has to the early it still needs to be brought up as it is likely the most problematic issue.

The outlet being inboard more means the top manifold that is screwed down to the top module cover is no longer in the correct spot, the screws need to be re-located as the manifold is slightly swung to fit better, that keeps the pump from being cocked in the hole there.

I fix that on my use of the late pumps in early module by making up a top plate that holds down the manifold, it no longer needs the 3 screws any more. The top plate is attached to the top module cover by 3 short studs and nuts drilled to fit and adjusted so all is tight and the pump swung in the correct amount.

I apologize to all, I should have looked closer before posting what I did, the Contour pump is still a better choice as the body OD and nozzle are the correct LENGTH and no need to mod all that like on the late pump but the Contour one is not close enough that people will not still gripe over using it.

My bad, I tried but reality is what it is. I gotta suck it up as I would feel really bad knowing I steered people into buying the wrong part that didn't work and my knowing how hard money can be to come by at $8 an hour or whatever. It's never enough.

Got any pix? It sounds like a real good hack, easier to repeat if you could see these things before starting.
