After reading a bunch of really informative threads here, I feel like i need to do something about my 2000 SPI that hasn't dropped a valve seat... yet, and in this economy I want to save some money. Im due for a timing belt change soon and that would be a good time to do something about the seats.. Has anyone found any kind of aftermarket or backyard solution to this problem? Are there any aftermarket seats with more interference? I cant seem to find any. Or is it possible to "peen" the stock valve seats and regrind them if necessary? I know the proper solution is engine swap / get a zetec, but I'm not trying to break the bank right now.

They have remanufactured heads on ebay with the problem supposedly fixed. I had been putting it off and my SPI dropped a valve seat and took out the block too. So the easy solution is off the table now. Highly recommend you address it before yours does the same thing.

Make sure you change the water pump with belt, it commonly goes bad to ruin a new belt.

You don't peen the seat, it cracks if you do. It cracks easy enough as it is. You peen the outside surrounding metal.
