im looking into picking up a xtant 404m, 50x4 @ 4ohm - 100x4 @ 2ohm. or a older PPI a404 with similar specs... question~

anyone know how much trouble i would have running 2 channels for the mids and 2 channels for the tweets? i know there is quite a bit of adjustment with the xtant and its accessory modules that can be inserted, but im not exactly sure to what extent.

should i look into an external processor?

also im looking for cheap; yet nice sounding mids and tweets. im looking for a DIY set to keep costs down. like 150ish or so, would prefer less! any suggestions would help a ton!

Good timing. I've been researching DIY components for an active setup.

Depending on the price you can find those amps for, I have other suggestions for you.

What head unit will you be using? Or are you open to suggestions?

Tweeter:

LPG 25NFA tweeter is an 8 ohm 1" silk for $75/pr
80w, 92dB sensitive, crossover at 3K
http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=6233807.22469&pid=635
pdf http://www.madisound.com/pdf/lpg.pdf

Woofer

Seas CA18RNX (H1215) is a 7" 8 ohm driver for $112/pr

http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=1914558.22700&pid=1043
pdf http://www.seas.no/seas_line/woofers/H1215.pdf
88dB sensitivity, 80w

or the

Seas G18RNX/P (H1100) is the fiberglass cone version of the above. $130/pr
88.5dB sensitivity, 110w, 8 ohm
http://www.seas.no/seas_line/woofers/H1100.PDF

The possible downside is they are 83.5mm mounting depth (3.29"), which may be possible with a 3/4" baffle and some spacers to hold the door panel slightly out to keep it from touching the woofer in motion.

Another possibility:
Peerless 850518 6.5" woofer, 4 ohm, $77.50/pr
90dB, 150w
http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=9086432.23332&pid=826
specs http://www.tymphany.com/prodpeerless.php

or Vifa PL18WO09-04 is a 4 ohm, 100w for $118/pr
http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=9193935.23723&pid=1391
specs http://www.tymphany.com/prodvifa.php

You'll need to check the mounting depth of any driver to make sure it fits.
3" is perfect with a 1/2 baffle. More than that gets tricky.

You'll for sure want sound dampening material on the doors.

And also mount the tweeter in the a-pillars.
I have a How-To in the FAQ for that, and also baffles.

You may want to check prices and recommendations from Nguyen [email protected]
His website for DIY car audio is http://www.diymobileaudio.com

There's a lot of great reviews on that site.

im trying to keep everything real cheap, cause if not ill never complete it!

Are you planning on running a sub?

Depending on what amp you get, and what crossover features it offers, helps decide what head unit to use.

My Alpine 9815 can be found on eBay under $200, and it has a 3-way crossover option, along with 6 DACs for details, 5-band PEQ for spikes and dips, etc. (it allows you to bandpass the mid, which is perfect for a 2-way active front, plus sub in the rear).

An external Coustic crossover can be used as well, and they are inexpensive.

I wouldn't buy anything until you decide on a total package.
When you go active, everything needs to match up.

Also, 50w at 4 ohms is questionable.
75w-100w would work better.

If you don't feel adventurous, then you can buy the Alpine SPX-177R components at http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/2171 for $220. They are rated 75w at 4 ohms, and are biampable with killer crossovers. They are based off of the Vifa XT line. I hear these can't be beat for a packaged component set in that price range.

If you plan to run a sub, then you have to get another amp.
If you want to stay with a single 4ch amp setup, then you'd have to have the fronts passive off the front channels, and a sub on the rear channels bridged, like my current setup. This you could do with the Alpine set, or you could get CDT Audio CL or EF components for around $150-$200. The Alpines will offer the option of going active via the crossovers later on. The Alpine set is rated 75w at 4 ohms, which will work with 50w at the minimum.

Now for your original active approach, the trouble is finding really good drivers to match in frequency response that will also fit in the installation. (mounting depth for the Focus doors)

Easiest approach:
LPG tweeters with the Peerless woofers crossed at 3k will work. $150
Great midbass, good midrange, great highs.

If you want better midrange, then you'll have to get creative with installation.

* If you can get one of those Seas woofers to fit in the door, then it's no question. Get the Seas woofer with the LPG tweeter crossed at 3k and have an active 2-way that blows away component packages 4 or 5 times the money.

Again, you'll need more power, as these are 8 ohm drivers intended for home use. Those amps you mentioned would only provide 25w per driver. They are rated 80w at 8 ohms, so 50w-100w would be better (100w-200w at 4 ohms).

If you feel even more creative with installation:

Find a place to mount the tweeters and use:
Dayton RS components $160, crossed at 2k
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=275-130
with
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=295-364

You'd have to de-buck (remove) the secondary shielding magnet from the 7" driver to make it fit. These drivers are getting rave reviews and performing as good as drivers 4x the price. You can fiberglass the tweeters in the a-pillars, mount them in the doors, or in the kickpanels.

Ha ha, here's another option to play with:

The Dayton RS180S-8 7" woofer (de-bucked)
crossed-over around 1k with
Aura NSW1 and NSW2 on each side in the a-pillars.
the two Auras would help balance the output, and
the NSW1 would help cover 15-20k, where the NSW2 falls off.
$145 total

Dayton RS

def. gonna use my eclipse 5442 for now, maybe later down the road ill switch it up, we'll see (we need to put a new cd player in the escape before i get another source for the focus).

i noticed the whole 8ohm problem with the 404m running them and the lack of power... so maybe i gotta rethink this whole idea of active-

i like the SPX 6.5's and have been looking at them for the past year or so, but im so in-decisive! i know the CDT's get rave reviews left & right but have never heard them so would choose the Alpines over CDT!
Also gonna run a sub(s) not quite sure what yet, either 2 or 3 IDQ10's, 2 IDQ12's, MKIII, Brahma, etc- there are to many to choose from!

maybe i should revamp my whole idea here- im just trying to save as much loot as possible, maybe thats my issue?! oh well-

The idea is great, you just need to piece it together and buy what you can when you have the money.

So you already have the 5442. It has high-pass on the front and rear, plus low-pass on the sub. Do you know how high you can cross-over the front? And also what slopes are available?

As far as budget, you can put together the front-stage now, and do the sub setup later.

Do you already have the Xtant amp, or just thinking about it?

I'd really like to see you get into Zed Audio amps. They are the best performance for the money. The Zed Draconia is $388, rated 70w x 4ch, actual is 95w, has isolated pre-amp for low noise, regulated power supply, and has the crossover features for your setup, ranging from 46Hz-3500Hz, with bandpass on ch3/4 for active midbass in a 2-way, or midrange in a 3-way.

You could later get a Zed Minilith for $241 with 650w at 1 ohm, subsonic filter, and parametric EQ. Perfect power for 2 IDQ 12" subs.

Autotek XS900.4 110w x 4ch $225

I'd pay $150 for that Oz set.

The guy seems pretty legit, and the Oz components haven't changed much over the past few years. They don't have crossovers, so you'd need to go active with them.

Let me know if you are gonna bid.

If not, I might bid at the last moment.

One hour to go.
