We got to test out whether or not the 2.3 Ecoboost throttle body had any gains over the stock 2.0 throttle body. Here are the results.

2012 NA 2.0 Focus
Fuel: 87 Octane with 2 gallons of E85
6509 plugs with approx 50k on them
Stock intake boot, Green filter drop in, approx 10 months since cleaned
Oil change with motorcraft 2 weeks ago
Thermal R&D 3" catback
Wheels are Enkie VR5 17x8 with 245/45 Nitto rubber

Throttle body comparison
first 3 runs on stock TB in 4th, 4th run in 3rd
Devil tuned max rpm 6900

Changed TB to the 63mm
Stock intake boot
Devil Tuned max rpm 6900 tune only adjusted for throttle body flow difference.
3 runs in 4th, 1 run in 3rd.

3rd gear comparison shows 6hp and 3 ft/lb torque gain

Stock TB-166.42hp / 152.91trq
63mm TB- 172.45hp / 155.91trq

4th gear comparison shows 3hp and 1 ft/lb torque gain

Stock TB-167.90hp / 154.93trq
63mm TB -170.96hp / 155.96trq

all runs displayed

stock TB
162.60hp / 151.60 trq
160.41hp / 149.89 trq
167.90hp / 154.93 trq

63mm TB
170.96hp / 155.96 trq
170.76hp / 156.62 trq
169.57hp / 155.70 trq

do you think i would see the same rough 8 horse power gain from that with the stock exhaust system?

Not 8, but doubtful, as with more air in, you need to get more out

Is the stock exhaust system really all that restrictive? my car is registered in Connecticut so i need to keep it legal.

Catbacks don't void your emissions, just have to chk noise ordinance...
We have catbacks on rebeldevilpower.com

Based on the result looks like you need to have a tune for 63mm TB in order to see any difference.
Yes a tune is recommended for it to operate to the full potential

So there was no testing done just for the TB and just for the hose , then just the hose and TB ?

No tune is needed for either mod , no tune should of been used to test these parts

The only difference in the tune is specifically for the TB settings. And the hose on this test was the stock one. Once we have an MST one in house, I'll dyno again... as I said before, I provide all data, images, video....

You dont need a tune to test the TB accurately it adds an extra equation to the mix where gain could be had other then the part

But I understand you sell these parts and how could you sell them if they didnt have a gain

I was hoping to see the result/differences in throttle bodies (+ hose) performances without any tune.
I 100% agree with you , your spot on , no tune should of been used

This is great. Great to know that there is another way to get gains for the NA mk3 duratecs. These cars have been out for a long time now and we are still discovering new things like this!

Can't wait for more testing to see what else can be gained with the MST intake boot.

I said if there was no gain i would show, if loss I would show... I'm sure most of these people can understand going from a 55mm to a 63mm TB would need adjustments for the correct airflow.. so YES, a TB specific tune update is warranted....

I have dynoed about a dozen of them and the A/F or the timing needed changing

If there was a air flow increase you would see some HP gains with NO Tune as well for the small if any flow increase it has

There is something you can do to move the throttle plate faster but that doesnt change flow

"I have dynoed about a dozen of them" well then you should know how to tune for them...... end of story

Its like slapping a header on the MK3 and not tuning for it, going lean is a bad thing. You adjust the tune for the increase in TB diameter for higher airflow.. common sense when tuning for a larger TB...
