5w30 --VS-- 5w20

Sorry I have to go here but it's a thing that P*SSES ME OFF

The SVT focus is required to have 5W30 for those of you running 5W20 in it... READ YOU SVT SUPPLEMENT BOOKLET! IT CLEARLY SAYD 5W30

For all the 5W20 users! That is for "ALL OTHER" FOCI ENGINES NOT THE SVT


This RAGING post caused by reading past SVT messages.

oops in my rage I placed the wrong number's in at first! It's 5w30 for the SVT 5w 20 for all other Foci[???:)]

ya, I wouldn't use that 0W-30 or 5W-20 stuff unless I was racing a few hundred miles then changing the oil (that's how racing oil is used....not every 3-5k miles). I realize people use 5W-20 for gas mileage, but I doubt the savings are significant vs. protecting your engine at the high rpms we all run (since this forum is basically full of people that like to race).

I don't want to start that thread back up though, because you won't change people's opinions, even with facts (and there were a lot of "facts" going back and forth in that thread).

I'd say 5W-30 is fine all year for any of the Foci, but in the summer, 10W-30 may be good for the SVT if that's what it calls for....remember, different years may call for different things. The engine can run on almost any of the oils, and don't be suprised if the economy, and stock prices have a large effect on those stickers the dealership slaps on. The best stock for Ford to have would of course be in the oil business. They want all the money they can get from us, or they would have high horsepower cars running on practically nothing already....the technology is there.

emissions...emissions...emissions...."damn tree huggers"..jk, I'm all about protecting the environment, but something to think about, which costs more? Standard 5W-30 or special oils like 5W-20? Again, think about Fords piece of that profit.

ford tells you to use 5w20 because it is slightly better for gas mileage. This was all discussed in further detail in that other oil thread.

ah... another conspericy... and you know more than the engineers right? I take it you went and got your engineering degree and work for an engineering company for the oil business? Ford has no stake in it. Ford has no reason to design an engine to use that oil if it will wear it out or not protect it properly. Motorcraft 5W-20 is a blended oil.. with synthetic and dino oil.

The object of ford is to make money by selling cars. Not by making sure each engine they make lasts 500k miles problem free therefore bringing zero revenue into their service department. Think a little, man. To keep selling cars, the collective gas mileage from all their cars must be over a certain number. They report this number to the government. If it is to low, they are penalized by the government. To help increase this number, they use oil that will increase the mileage as much as it can. Now even though 5w-20 vs 10w-30 will only help out the mileage 1-2 mpg, on all their cars being raised 1-2, that number can increase greatly. With a thicker lubricant (10w-30) it is going to help protect your engine from unnecessary wear a lot better. Get a magnetic drain plug for your oil pan and you will see what im talking about. You will see extremely tiny metal fragments stuck to the plug whenever you change your oil. This is your engine wearing away. I dont know anything about the svt's requirements, but look at the manual. Usually, they dont specify that it will only work with a certain grade of oil. The zetec manual recommends that you use 5w-20 because it is best for fuel economy, but you can use pretty much any oil that meets API or SAE service requirements. Thats why i used 5w-20 for the first 6k miles and after that switched to 10-w30. But some engines specify only to use certain oils becasue some can screw up the engine and cause leaks, but the focus does not use any motor that specifies that. But read the manual. Becasue im not too sure about the svt.

I like ya vanance, you TRY to keep people informed, but no one said anything about being an engineer or a chemist (what you meant I'm sure because they test the oil...engineers test the motor). Fact is 5W-20 is simply for emissions purposes. It is a thinner oil and thinner oils won't protect as well (that's common sense). I'm going by what my local mechanics tell me. They know cars. They've seen what works, and what doesn't by trial and error. And besides, my Focus calls for 5W-30 and not 5W-20, so that's by the book.(this is a guess, but I'd bet it changed when the PZEV was introduced)

and...5W-20 is politically related because of emissions and environment regulations (yes, that's right, these are political issues). If they really cared about the environment, they would have improved the engine more and not gone to a thinner oil. Continuing to use the same volume of oil in your car is not an improvement no matter how thin the oil gets. It just makes you buy their car because of the mpg # on the sticker, not to mention make the engine feel smoother with the thinner oil, and impress you more on the test drive (aaahhh the test drive, it always gets that person driving the old lunker car - I SOLD Kias...that's right SOLD...poor suckers!).

Sorry about the 10w30 thing!! Rage does that to you... Anyway it's fixed now...

Who cares about the HP gain between 5w20 and 5w30 (if there is any)... Thats why you use a good synthetic oil! Mobile1, amsoil, royal purple, or some other compairable!
