hi i am a new ford focus owner(2 months now) and i was wondering if there are any cheap ways to give some better acceleration and power to a stock 4 cylinder engine?
it is a 2000 ford focus 5 speed with 17 inch rims

Welcome to the forum...Look around, there are tonnes of things, we talk about that all the time..Check the performance sections and the FI section.

on the engine all it says is 2.0L split port, that is the only visible words that come branded on the engine.

SPI is Split Port injection, isnt it?

yah, ur cursed to have the SPI,as there arent many mods for it, but its a completely bulletproof engine, will easily do 200k

All Foci are stock 4-cyl's - Duratec, Zetec, and SPI (split port injection) are just different models of engines with varying features, displacements, and performance. General mods are the same for all engines, such as cold air induction (aka CAI or "intake"), exhaust, engine tunes, and on and on. The configuration and effectiveness of the mods is what varies from engine to engine. Good luck and welcome to the forums.

Well my spi is about to die. It has 55k... so much for being bulletproof. I replaced the clutch at 50k. POS in every way. My lifter is now acting up after a night of driving too fast. However, i usually drive the spi at 70% capability so the life might be longer than that if you drive like a grandma (a.k.a. my dad.) actually, only 20k of those miles are mine and the grandma drove it before.

IN summation, drive the spi really slow like its meant to be driven. If you dont, you will be looking at a costly repair like I am now.

My oil has been changed at three thousand mile intervals (sometimes more often than that) since it was brand new. New filter every time. 5W-20 or 10W-30 Castrol. Ive had regular maintenance on it like the typical radiator flush, fluids check, brake replacements, and tire rotation. Basically, ive done everything that i am suppost to do as its owner. Recently, I took the car over to goodyear for its oil change. NOW I check their work and wabaaam the coolant is well below the minimum line. Those freakin idiots cant even fill up my fluids! Oil level is ok though...lol.

how often did/do you guys change your ATF, for those with autos?

Not often enough. I bought it at 50k and I am not sure it had been done. The PO had all the scheduled maintenance done but I don't know if that was part of it. Then I went to 95k before I changed it.....been slipping ever since. I didn't treat it very well but it doesn't seem like anything unusual for the mileage.

I would put in the Lentech VB if I thought it would help. I'm just worried that the clutch packs would need to be replaced too/instead of.

Time will tell.
