This randomly started happening to me while driving to work. I was driving the car normally and I went from N to 3rd and it make a really bad grinding noise and just reved so I pulled it out, and tried again and the same thing happened. If I hold it firmly in 3rd and release the clutch its fine. If im going through the gears normally it goes in normal with no problems, and if im raging on it and go to third it makes a bad scraping type noise when it goes into it. I changed the fluid and it helped for a little but nothing really changed.

Any ideas? Its an 02 with the reverse lockout btw.

Your third gear syncro is going out. It is very common. I did my own tranny rebuild because of it. Drive it nice and it will last for several more years. Do not and it will get worst.

Unlikely other problems could be a worn clutch, bad forks, or shift linkage.

Some people get away with putting in "Ford Honey" for a while. It is thicker tranny fluid.

Thanks for that, thats what I was thinking was the problem. Yeah at the moment I dont have the means for doing a rebuild so ill just be easy on 3rd until I do the syncros/clutch.
