looking into maybe getting some OZ Supertourismo WRC 17" rims eventually and Tire Rack did a survey and the General Tire UHP recieved the higest score in the high performance summer category. alas, it comes in only 215/40 and 215/45, the tire calculator on 1010tires said that the 215/40 is closer to the stock 205/50R16 so i would go with that although in the tires and wheels thread it says the recommonded tire size for 17's is 205/45....

is this all that big of a deal???.... or are the 215/40 going to be even better due to tread width???

I would go 215-45. Otherwise you don't have much rubber so you get a harsh ride and if you nal a pot hole, you can bend the rim depending on the number of spokes or blow out the tire. I have 205-50-16 stock and I have 215-45-17 now. SPeedo is like 2.3% off If I recall. I even considered 225-45 for a tad extra rubber.

whats the max you could go on a 17x7???

i imagine even 225 is prolly pushin it.

Depending on the offset of the wheel depends on what tire size you can go. I honestly would go 215-45, besides, it came stock on the svt and being that it is a common tire size, might be relatively cheap. There is a guy with 245-45-17 on stock svt wheels if I recall correctly, but you really can't use all that rubber anyway.

indeed but a 225/40 is only a .05% diameter difference...
the offset is.....
48mm

that relatively high, so i should be able to go that big right???

yeah, assuming you aren't lowered, I can't see you having many problems. I would keep it 225 and below though. Don't wory too much bout the speedo, not a huge deal.

hmmm, 2 inches, you have a fairly large offset, knowing this, I would stick with 215-45 or 215-40. How's your ride wuality by the way with a 2 inch drop and MI roads?

yea 215 is the most popular 215 45 actually, i have 205 45s on my 17s but thats what was on the car from the dealer(they slapped on some nice 17s and hi performance tires) Neway 205 is reccomended b/c its close to stock specs, so that the speedo and the odometer is not that much of to make a big difference. Ive tested it and a mile with the 16s is basically the same as with my 17s, probably off by the slightest bit, and its probably off like 1 or 2 miles an hour on the speedo.

If you look on Tire Rack the stock 2003 SVT tire size on 17" rims is 215/45R17. I went with this size becuase it's very close to the circumference as the stock ZX tire. I run the BFGoodrich KDW-2s. Here are a few shots on my car with the Eibach Pro drop:

^^^Actually, those Nitto tires in the link are the only 225/40/17's I've ever seen.

when i looked at the tire calculator again it said that the rim width range for a 225/40 is 7.5-9" the OZ Supertourismo WRC's are 17x7's
so it sounds like 215/40 is going to be a better fit and i'll be able to get the General Tire UHP (IIRC) that got such good ratings at Tire Rack.

I have 215-40-ZR17s on my wheels and they are fine. The rides a little rough, mind the 2" drop, it does leave a little gap at the wheel well again, but a nice set of coilovers would change that...lol...we all have dreams [:D]
