I had the car for about 3 years and this problem just started.
No matter how much gas I have in my car every time I stop, it doesn't matter if I fill it up or just put a little in, my focus doesn't want to start.
It will turn and shut off, I'll try and the same thing happens, then eventually it will crank up but idle and vibrate very badly until I put it in gear and then about 10 seconds later it's fine.
It runs like a dream until I have to get gas and I'm not sure what the problem is.

There is a TSB for a purge valve failure in those years that can cause the fuel tank to collapse to cause other issues like running rich when the car is started. You can look under car to see if fuel tank bottom is no longer dead flat, it begins to suck up to be not level.

You may be there.
