I just bought this car from a used car dealer. it has 24,000 miles on it and mechanically it's good, had it checked out at a ford dealer, just had an oil change done as well.

Love the car, the only thing that's bothering me is the back seat. every other focus I've seen isn't like this. it has the metal piece underneath and that metal piece fold up so you can lay the seat flat.

Now, i love that my car is like this, because i can have the rear seats totally flat and still have my seats all the way back.

My question is...why? why would someone take it out? i mean, i like how it is now compared to how it's supposed to be..but what was their reason for doing it?

Probably because the prior owner used it as a cargo van and didn't really want to have the rear seat installed.

that is the only reason.
In my Contour SVT the rear seat folded down but the bottom just sat there. Once i wanted move a Flatsceen 42" T. i popped the rear seat bottom out. It never did get locked back down, So i let it sit there, half loose never a problem, When I wanted it out, easy, it was out and not in the way.
The folding Se back seat bottoms get in the way of larger items. And maybe one time need was all it took.
Specially if the owner had to have the front seat way back. the interference of the tilted up seat bottom and the back laid flat... would prevent that. So.. out the bottom came.
With only the foam it would not scratch anything when pulled out etc.
So yeah it seems that would be it.
If it bothers you buy a replacement from a junkyard.
