My local dealer said it was not covered since it has a salvage title. So I am out $1500. So be it. It makes sense that the warranty would not have covered this anyway. My 2006 Malibu Maxx has had no issues whatsoever and rides great after almost 9 years. I am wondering if my Focus was totalled due to steering problems...

A rebuilt "totalled" car that's always been hard to steer since acquired.

Prev. threads here on both troubles after accident repair with alignment/bearings etc. AND on issues trying to get a replacement steering rack working when doing a rebuild - from wiring to programming.

Proverbial can of worms for possible problems.

2012 Ford Focus SE Hatchback Steering Assist gone

New to the forum but just wanted to give my experience on this car. Bought brand new from dealer even after reading about the problems with this car, thought I might get a good one....wrong. Transmission was first problem, roll backs on stops, hesitating etc, no power with gas mashed, stalling. Took it to my local Stealership under recall for reprogramming. Thought everything was good for a while...wrong did it again a few months ago. Shut vehicle off restarted it was fine. About a week after it did that, my wife was merging into traffic on a very busy road and the steering assist went out, basically locking the steering wheel. Thank God she was in the outside lane and did not get hit or get into an accident, she basically went off the shoulder of the road. She was so scared she was crying and I could barely understand her when she told me what happend on the phone. My children were also in the car and they were petrified. My wife will not drive the car as she is scared of it, I now only drive it 5 miles to work and back since I am the only one who can turn the steering wheel. I have been back and forth with Ford for months about fixing it under a recall since they have known about this issue for years yet they want to charge me about $2000 to repair the whole steering rack. I have called our joke of a dealership (Nick Nicholas Ford in Crystal River, Fl). I have contacted the State's Attorney, I have filed complaints with the NHTSA. I have to say I will never own another Ford of any kind again after going through this ordeal, still without a resolution to the problem. I have just seen they are recalling over a half a million Ford vehicles now for steering related problems. I can only hope they will own it and take care of this on my vehicle. I feel cheated and betrayed by a company that touts they are very serious about safety. This is my experience so far. Buyer beware of these vehicles.

I have a 2012 Focus Ti with 18" wheels. It is a crash car, but after fixing it, I have been driving it for two years with no fault codes. Then I had the stiff steering issues described in here and took it to the dealer for the TSB 12-2-17 gear replacement. After replacing the gear, he had two issues: 1) Steering is stiffer to the left than to the right. It's feels like it is "catching" then slipping, but it goes away after a few minutes of driving. 2) There is a hill assist warning that now appears. He tried two different gears and replaced a clock spring. After three weeks, I took it back because these guys were inspiring zero confidence in me. (Dealer thinks there's an electrical short between the RCM and an airbag module. I had this all replaced after the accident so I'm skeptical.) I think it's some sort of position error. Has anyone seen this before? Any advice?

Hello GoIndy98,

Have you considered seeking a second opinion from another Ford Dealer? Also, what’s the mileage on your vehicle? I’ll be happy to look into available options to assist! [:)]

Ford Service Tricia: There is a known issue that comes & goes you could take it to five dealers & if it isn't happening at the time when you get there what do you do? (hopefully there aren't any accidents as a result of lost steering ) MJB

Don't quote me but if the Focus has rack n pinion steering then as with my '95 Escort, it could be a rack n pinion bushings being bad.....this is what is going on with my Escort, it is stiffer to one side than the other than it gets sloppy like a king pin going out like on the old Ford PU.....just my experience!

Our law firm handles vehicle defect cases and we're starting to look into accidents involving the Focus where possible power steering issues led to severe injuries or death.

I will provide an updated post when we learn something new.

Dangerous Steering Problem: 2013 Focus SE/Hatch/59,100 miles

I am a new member, I am no stranger to automobiles or working on them as I grew up in a family automotive business in Eden Prairie, MN.

My 2013 Ford FOCUS SE/Hatch/Automatic with 59,050 miles on it steering intermittently LOCKS UP while driving !. It first happened while teaching my 15 year old daughter how to drive this weekend. She has driven it many times and we almost were put into oncoming traffic as it locked up right after her correcting normal lane drift. Needless to say I was more than a little upset. It seems that whatever the normal locking mechanism (when in park and key turned off) is trying to lock the steering while driving. It makes a very strong clicking noise and can be overcome by a strong adult male but is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I called the local Ford Dealer talked to Service and you would have thought I was speaking French, he acted like he had never heard of any service problems with 2012-2014 Ford Focus. Apparently he has no access to the world wide web that is so popular these days. I NEED HELP ! Any suggestions and how long is factory warranty on steering components?

Update: I took it to Waconia Ford in Waconia, MN: Very nice response and act of concern and gave me a loaner vehicle. Their Service Manager put in a
claim (I have the number) and Ford flat out refused to help in any way[?|]

The estimate to fix is $1613. These parts should not fail and make it unsafe to drive at 59,000 or even 159,000. UNSATISFACTORY Ford

FAIL

Ok As I have posted before--Ford won't acknowledge this issue-mine was a corroded main connection- it took a diligent mechanic to figure it out---my cost was my ESP copay---(my dealership is VG--service writer excellent-he didn't laugh) I also had a rental over night-it took awhile to figure it out. The steering is electric& controlled by electronics-when not working it's like an old car with manual steering-even tougher.

I am extremely pissed and dissatisfied with FORD's response to my problem and unwillingness to take responsibility for INFERIOR product. Had the catastrophic steering failure happened to an inexperienced or weak driver, it would have caused an accident in my car. The diagnosis and fix is to replace the rack and pinion steering rack that includes the electric assist steering box. Cost to me @ 59,040 miles. $1700 !!!
NOT ACCEPTABLE. My Ford Claim number is #9678282. The Ford Service Rep I talked to @ 1-800-392-3673 was SHANNON. She said the FORD was unwilling to cover any of it. Total Bullxxxt!!

I've got a 2014 Focus SE Hatch with 46k miles on it and I've got the Steering Assist Fault, Service Required warning coming on on occasion now too, with loss of power steering. Took it to ford and got the same ~$1700 estimate. The warning has come on 4 times and I can clear it by turning the car off and back on. It has gone about 800 miles since the last time it did it 3 weeks ago but did it again this week. Still deciding what to do about it, it's hard to believe Ford engineers came up with this non-serviceable part that costs large fractions of what the vehicle is worth. Plus if they just replace it with the same EPAS it looks like it's going to happen again and again.

Just got my car back. My dealer Waconia Ford in Waconia, MN did a great job, including service advisor Ashley. They gave me a free loaner and were empathetic to my problem.
It cost $1555.00 with obviously new Ford parts. Pretty sad the FORD didn't give me the parts and that I pay labor only for this failing part. I would imagine a couple of serious injuries (could have easily happened to me) or a death would get their attention more than Joe average customer having the problem and knowing that my attorney fees would quickly escalate past the price of repairing it. Ford really needs to try harder/do better as I was likely going to buy a new ST...but now...not so much.

I had the same issue, warning steering assist failure. Pull the car over, turn the car off open the door to make sure that it completely turned off. It worked about 15 times over the years, and I work 6 days a week, so I did not have time to deal with the dealership . The power steering finally went out completely. I take it to ford, they told me there was nothing they could do because my extended warranty ran out at 100,000 miles. I had just gotten to 130,000 miles and had been fighting the car the whole time. So, they called me said it would be $1600 for just the part and that there was only one available in the us, so it would take some time to get the part in. I was not offered a rental, because none were available. Thanks to all my friends, I was able to get a ride to work and then back to the dealership. When the service manager called, and asked me what to do with my car, I told him to put it in the parking lot and that I would pick it up later. I was told that it was hard to steer the car, my only reply was that I'll pick it up later. I found the unable part online for $100 and installed it myself on the ground in my garage on a 100 degree day. It took me 9 hours because I'm not a Ford mechanic, but it is working better than day I purchased the car, I can turn it with my pinkie finger while stoped. I am so disappointed by Ford, shame on you. Your sales guys even tried to sell me another one while I was there, said I could trade it in on an new one. I just left.

Is the FORD steering rack the exact same as that it came from originally ?
In other words can I expect to spend a couple grand every few years ?[?|]

This just happened to me. I can't even believe it. This is so ridiculously dangerous for me and any of my passengers, let alone anyone else on the road.

First, I called Ford due to the "Hill Start Assist" and "Airbag" lights coming on in my car, and they said it's probably just a computer glitch. They told me that I probably didn't have to come in if they went off. Well they went off and I didn't go in. Two days later, I get the same problem that you have, with the car being nearly unresponsive. Low mileage at 68,000 as well.

They're now quoting me for close to $2500, this is close to 1/4 of what I paid for the whole car!? How did no one see this issue after having the TCM issues and multiple repairs? I had the wide-spread issue fixed a few months ago and no one caught this other problem?

Did you have any kind of luck or resolution with your problem?
