How long was the car sitting on the lot before you picked it up? I only ask because there was a specific special service message that said if the car wasn't driven for over 3 weeks (maybe it was longer) with the a/c compressor switched on before the car was last shut down that it could cause the compressor to fail on restarting the car for the first time since then. Its why generally you'd not want to leave a car sitting for long enough to develop problems while in inventory, let alone in storage when purchased.
Um, mine was sitting on the lot for awhile (30 Nov 12) and since I picked it up Feb 28, I have not run the A/C, I did see that the climate control said it was running one day but as soon as I noticed it, I shut it off. Any reason to be concerned? What 'Special Service Message' are you referring to since it will warm up here eventually and I'd like to be prepared if possible.

My A/C underperforms. I dread Summer. In fact, I don't intend to be driving this by then. I think Ford really should have spent more time on the new gen.

And by the way, dealers just suck. If Ford wants to up their game start demanding better CS out of their dealers. But that's true with any car maker. Cars today are commodities. Dealers are just peddling widgets so maybe that explains the lack of pride.

I don't have access to the service messages anymore, but I recall this one specifically because it was related to improper storage and when the car was first started after having sat with the compressor engaged it could seize, however if the compressor was not seized up or left on prior to the car starting for the first time then it wasn't an issue.

Turning the a/c compressor on and off isn't going to damage it, but the extended storage with it engaged could have caused it to seize and lock up which would fry the compressor and take the belt out with it afaik.

It sounds like yours is fine as long as the a/c works when it gets hot again.

The one day when it was above 60 here and I tried to use the a/c it worked amazingly, and its worked great when it was 80-90F and humid here as well, so to say that as a blanket statement the Focus doesn't have a good a/c system is a bit of a misnomer.

Well have the car back from the dealer today and all is good, this dealership in Henderson NV has been very good to us and and I would give them a A+ for service and customer service...
We had ours reserviced at Gaudin. It now works better than it once did but as another poster said it, here in the desert, I've come to dread summer time driving this car. With 2 small kids in a 110 degree weather, I feel as if I'm asking for trouble especially if it goes out altogether.

how does this sound for an A/C problem:

I am in FL for the winter ... but car up north resting for 6 months. I arrive back and try to start focus. car starts, engine then squeals, smoke puffs out of engine compartment, motor turns itself off. So hey bozo that I am ... I try it two more times, now with hood up to see if I can figure out what's wrong. smoke is coming from belt area.

call warantee towing ... they tow it to nearest dealer to my home which is in another state and 17 miles away.

dealer gets car, tech pops key in and drives it around the lot, no problem. next day they drive it around another 20 miles ... again no problem ... they don't know what could have caused it ... and now they want to charge me $45 bucks for the inconvience of having worked on a car with no problem. duh...

Of course ... here I am with a Focus with 9K miles on it that already has a new headliner, a new clutch, 3 code changes, and the great unkown of engine starts, squeals, smokes and dies.

I just purchased a used 2012 focus se with 18k miles and the wife tells me the ac is not working very well. I already scheduled a trip to the dealer to get some more keys for it and have the 20k mile service (air filter) and will add this to the list.
This thread is making me a little nervous on this purchase :(

Unfortunately it seems like I do have a problem with the a/c in my 13 ST.

It began periodically blowing warm air even when set to the lowest setting with the a/c on.

This does not bode well, the a/c in the SEL worked so much better than this one does so far, it's incredible how poor this system is right now.

I need to get it fixed as soon as possible, but idk if the dealer will be able to do so.

Neon green PAG oil on the oil pan from near the compressor at 1380 miles.

That was 451.3 miles ago when I went to change the oil for the first time on the new ST and to get out the initial wear metals.

Dealer claimed system over charged by 3 ounces at the time of service, evac, possibly leak check and recharge the system, seems to get cold again, but does still slightly warm up periodically, but not nearly as warm as before. It's also been cold out so it's really hard to tell if it's working (cold being ~70F in terms of being able to measure the a/c functioning correctly).

Has any one had issues with their 2012 Focus in stop and go traffic with the a/c stops blowing cold air? When my Wife first got the car a/c would not work took it back and they said a fuse had dislodged and reinserted it no problems after that until this problem and of coarse Ford can not locate this issue has to become more of problem for them to locate this issue.

My entire AC quit. A week ago. Was told it was the control module in the dash.

The dealership told me that the parts would be in next day.
Lie.
Then they said next weekday as it happened on a Thursday.
Lie.
Contacted Ford through here and they call me telling me that the parts are on their way and they'd be here by Friday.... A week later.
Lie.
They called me Friday telling me Wednesday at the soonest.

Finding it hard to justify owning this car especially in Florida with no AC and a rainstorm every damn day. This is the first brand new car I've ever bought and I honestly regret it.

So after reading through the majority of this thread, I'm not sure if a definitive fix to the intermittent warm/smelly air was ever found. Some have had overcharged compressors, others replaced compressors entirely. Some mentioned the valve controlling the hot air flow would open up and blend in, but I don't think any of those fixes were permanent for anyone.
There was an interesting point made about the compressor sitting behind the shutters causing it to not receive as much airflow as it might need to function properly. If that's the case, then I'm sure they could easily flash in a provision that would keep the shutters open when the AC is running. After all, if you are running AC, it's probably really hot outside and the shutters should stay open anyway.
If anyone is aware of a method to override the shutter operation and keep them open all the time, then I would be willing to test it out and see if it makes my intermittent warm/smelly air problem go away. I figure disconnecting the power to the shutters while they are in the open position would work. Perhaps there is a fuse for them? I may have answered my own question...

So the dealership called me this morning to say my coolant was only at 40% (or it had lost 40%...I can't remember). The mechanic had injected some dye, but couldn't find a leak.

I'm not too hopeful that they'll actually find the cause of all this.
