Hey guys, new to the site... I just wanted to know what similarities the 2008-2011 and 2012 engines had in common. Are there any mods that can be done for the 2011 that will also work on the 2012? Thanks!

The blocks should be about the same, they're really the same engine just the newer one is direct injection and has dual variable cams. That being said I would just assume they are completely different seeing as there are considerable changes to how the motor works.

I am a little sad about the 12:1 thing. Boosting down the line was a dream I had... But looks like I'll have to settle for all the little things to boost performance like cold-air intake, exhaust, etc. And hopefully some sort of performance tuner will be available down the road. Too bad because there is so much space under there for a turbo set-up...

Boosting will not be impossible, just not to 11lbs and up right out the gate. The GDI systems are great systems and even though the motor runs 12-1 you still only need 87 oct gas. a lot of that has to do with the diesel like injector timing. The pistons have bowls in them that the gas is shot at when close to or at TDC, then its lit off by the spark plug. I wish I had more info about the EcoBoost versions and if they are keeping the 12-1 or if they are lowered some.

12:1 is still easily boostable. the Compression ratio is not the end all say all. w/ the DI, the fuel burn is much more even and keeps the temps on the piston crown much cooler. plus the fueling system can keep up and you don't have to worry about boost pressures. its all in the tune. but don't be surprised to see 15 psi out of the gate on these. granted, lowering CR will help w/ boost. but just like the SVT at 10.2:1 that was high for its type of injection. 12:1 w/ VCT and GDI will be done safely and effectively!

Even though the manual for the 2012 recommmends 87 octane I'm going to run Ethanol free 91 octane in hopes of that helping.

Its not the grade of gas that is causing the intake valves to get heavy deposits on them. Its the fact that since the engine is direct injected there isn't any fuel passing over the valve and cleaning it like in a traditional fuel injected engine. Therefore the oily gasses getting sucked into the intake manifold by primarily the PCV system bake onto the valve.

Just saw Ford has released a SS cat back exhaust for the 2012. I wonder if this could be used on 08-11 Foci?

No the chassis is 100% different. The muffler is placed improperly for the earlier models and the piping is routed completely wrong.

Early Dura-tech '05+ exhaust
You should be able to you the early car's cat back system= '05-'07 2.0 cat back system. Punch up FocusWerk's or Central Florida Motorsport's.

Any idea if the Cosworth Intake manifold would be compatible?

My guess is they will make a new one, since this car is global, and cosworth does a lot of Ford performance.

The head is too different, the new DI head has the fuel rail and injectors under the intake manifold. The cosi would hit the rail.... And so on
