Hi All,

I have just bought a 11/2006, South African built LS Focus Sedan, 4 Speed Auto. It's a great car and I love the driving dynamics.

However, at speed it occasionally holds onto second gear (I think). For example, yesterday I accelerated 0-80 (KM/H) (50 MPH) and held it at 80, and it stayed at around 4700RPM, only after 15 seconds did it shift gear. This was on a very slight descent.

Also, occasionally when coming to a complete stop, after half a second, it will jerk forward briefly.

Does anyone have any clues as to what might be the issue here?

Car has 80,000kms (50,000 miles) on the clock and the A/T fluid seems to be at the correct level from what I can tell. Also when I bought it the shifter was very stiff however after putting it in and out of sport (manual) mode a few times this has been fixed.

Thanks in advance :)

To follow up: The car seems to take ages to change back into first after coming to a complete stop, and when it does, you can feel it kick the car forward a little.

Does anyone have any clues as to fault or remedy? A/T fluid flush perhaps?

Thanks :)

Please have your OBD scanned for codes.

I rarely promote replacing car parts without good reason... but I do make an exception when the transmission is acting up. After checking fluid level and maybe some wiring tests (dependent of symptoms) I will often recommend replacing 1 or all 6 solenoids inside the transmission; but again, dependent of symptoms. This job is fairly easy or not too difficult.

I recommend replacing the solenoids primarily because it is one of the few things we can do at home and because it has a history of fixing many trans issues. Another somewhat easy home fix is replacing the intermediate band if/when you have no 2nd and 4th gear.

Here are some links that will help you learn some more and help you decide what might be best in your situation.
