Chiming in with my update. Thank you to everyone on this thread and especially the photo on how to use the hose. I had some hose that was 3/8" ID x 9/16" OD on hand and it worked perfectly. When I first felt the slop in the shifter, my heart sank a bit because I thought I was on the hook for some pricey cables.

So, I have to follow up with an unexpected surprise and benefit. While I had my shifter out, I put fresh white lithium grease (Permatex in the tube) on all of the contact points. The lower ball area that the shifter connects to (upper and lower part) and the lower part of the reverse lockout. Also, I put some white lithium grease in the end of the cables where it snaps on to the shifter.

Didn't notice anything immediately, but a few days later I went driving and I put it in reverse. It went into reverse so effortlessly and smooth that I thought something was broken. I pulled it out of reverse and ran it through a few gears and everything was just really smooth. I had to think for a second what happened and it hit me that I greased everything. The reverse lockout mechanism pulls up and down a lot smoother as well.

As for what gear oil I'm running, I am currently using the Amsoil 75w-90 GL4 stuff and I have some of the Motorcraft stuff on deck for when I complete this 30k interval.

What I am getting at is you might want to try this. The car now shifts smoother than it ever has. So while part of the shift quality is the fluid you use, the shifter itself being lubricated plays a big part as well. I didn't know this and just wanted to pass this information on.
