Hey all, I have a 2005 Focus, got home tonight, and found out the turn signals and brake lights are not working. Anyone have this problem before or have suggestions?
Here’s what I know:
  • Brake and turn lights do not work front or rear.
  • Hazard lights do not work.
  • Hazards do make clicking noise when button is pushed.
  • Third brake light on trunk lid does work.
I found out the turn signal fuse was blown so I replaced it, then I found:
  • Brake and turn lights worked with key in on position (engine not running).
  • Turned engine on and turn signal fuse blew again.
  • Replaced fuse again, turned key to on (engine not running). Brake and turn lights worked again. Pushed hazard light button and fuse blew again.
Any thoughts? Maybe the hazard relay?

If the car is a hatchback, check the wiring harness where it runs between the car body and hatch. Very common for wires to break there and symptoms can turn up in all kinds of strange places.

Thanks, but it’s a four door model with trunk lid. I’ll still check back there though. I replaced a headlight bulb about three weeks ago. Just an ordinary Sylvania bulb. Also cleaned the grounds near the battery because they had some corrosion. Not sure how those would have affected this though.

Quick follow up, found that the right front turn signal bulb had shorted out and blew some fuses. Replaced the bulb and fuses and all is working again.
