Just picked up a 02 Focus SVT that needs maintance love.

Its in the shop right now getting a clutch / timing belt / new tires / and check engine light... I have only driven it a mile and it was pretty peppy. Oh and it only has 95k on speedometer... Its red.... with Black and red interior. Paint is in good shape other than the clear coat pealing on front and rear bumper... I got it for a good deal I think ....

Should I just have the bumpers resprayed or can they buff the clear coat off because the paint appears ok just alittle faded.

thanks don

Welcome. [wave]

I guess if your really careful getting the clear off, that's all you really need to do. This obviously wouldn't fix any fading or stone chips that may be on the bumper, but if your not going for spotless show car quality, just a clear coat may be perfectly fine for you. Just make sure you clean the base coat really well before spraying clear coat becuase the exposed areas have probably had years of grime building up on it.

My svt is the same color and had the same paint issue on the rear bumper. I used the duplicolor spray paint in vermillion red. Sanded, masked, sprayed, then used the duplicolor clear. You have to look really close to see that anything has been done. 40 dollars total materials and a weekends time. Looks way better than flaky clearcoat. The prep work, sanding and buffing the finished product are the keys here

Fun to see the official build list for your car.

Active bunch of members down your way, check out this thread:http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=223938

Im really new to the svtf... thanks for the link I will check it out.

The previous owner put lots of aftermarket parts on it... rather than do preventative maintance... thats what Im taking care of now. What little I have driven it, its seems pretty peppy.

hi i didn't have much luck removing the clear coat from my hood but think the previous owner just re cleared it with some cheap ass stuff ,tried the product called "peeler" went right through the base coat ,tried a DA with 600 grit wouldnt cut it , ended up hitting it with 120 grit, then going through the grades back to 600, then just flat blacked it till i can get a respray ,the white showing through the peeling clear drove me nuts !

Well I have been driving the car a week now.. absolutely love driving it... Runs like a champ. I am going to replace the clutch before summer and go with a LUK replacement clutch. It rained today and the back bumper did not bother me much today. Now Im on the search for a complete back seat set brackets bolts ect for my car, the previous owner did the back seat delete to reduce weight. So the search is on[popcorn]

UPDATE... got the back seats installed this weekend... Car is almost complete... Clutch before summer and repaint of front and rear bumpers and hood in the spring...

Really love driving this car.

Glad you are enjoying it. I went through much of the same thing as you almost two years ago when I picked up my Silver 2003 5 door. Mine is bone stock but has all maintenance up to date and is just a blast to drive. I love being able to just put the pedal to the floor all the time and it holds the road great.

Enjoy yours.
