I just purchased a used 2002 Focus SE w/ bad Computer for $300. Car is in Nicaragua Central America.
ECU/PCM fired, due to last owner crossed plugs putting in new battery.
Can I swap out a computer on 2002 Ford focus manual transmission, With another computer ECU does also a 5 speed manual transmission same year. Off course the VIN will be different from donor car's ECU. I'm also thinking of taking from the donor car the PATS system the key in the key Ignition cylinder with the black ring piece that goes for the sending the signal for PATS system.
Please help with any advise.

You MUST have the matching key to that PCM........the only thing needed is key itself. The PATS chip is inside it.

OK, My plan is to find a same 5 speed donor car from the Junk Yard and buy the PCM the PATs which sit next to each other, also the Key(s) with the Black Ring to the same car, with all this done, but the PCM VIN of the donor car different vs. my car. (could reprogram the PCM to the donor car's VIN with ICS Software) {need to buy software}.
Would the car start?
So the PATs module is the Black Box with 4 yellow plugs, not really needed? Only need the Key with the matching PCM unit?
Thanks a million

Rick,
AMC is 100 percent correct - you only need the PCM and the matching key chip. You do not need to change the PATS transceiver ring at the ignition cylinder. But the transceiver needs to be able to 'see' (read) the chip so must be in proximity.

The PATS 'module' IS the PCM - there is no separate module. Perhaps the 'black box with 4 yellow plugs' you are referring to is the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) which mounts on top of the PCM on the passenger side. The GEM has nothing to do with PATS. BTW the connectors are not yellow but the release/locking levers are. The connectors themselves on the harness are different colors and there should be 5 of them.

BTW I also have a 2002 SE 5-speed (wagon) with the Zetec engine and the PCM is pn 1M5F-12A650-SB program code LFQ1. What is the pn and program code of your fried unit? Is your 2002 a Zetec or SPI engine?

Good luck
Paul

I have a 2002 SE 5-speed (sedan) with the Split Fire SOHC engine and the PCM is pn 2M5A-12A650-GB (LP2-315) program code XBU1.
Thanks for correct me on the PATs unit and Yellow plugs, (good to know that guys on this forum know their stuff).

Good luck
Paul

Rick,
That pic only shows the pn of the connector. The pn for the entire PCM is usually on a printed white label. PCM pn should have 12A650 core.

OK VIN engine code P = SPI (Split Port, not split fire)
So the PCM is different which makes sense.

OK, Focus Guys, this is what purchased, from Local Junk Yard, from a 2002 Ford Focus Manual Transmission.
All for the Focus that I bought out of country (In Nicaragua) with Bad - Burnt ECU/PCM.
The Original owner stated his fired the PCM when he put in a new Battery and crossed the battery cables.
I know I bought more then what I needed, but since I'm exporting to Out of Country , better safe theb sorry later.
My ?s, is do I need ANYTHING else, before I ship these items.
My car is : 2002 Ford Focus Black 5 speed Manual - VIN: 1FAFP34P32W331739 PCM: XBU1 : 2M5A-12A650-GB : LP2-315

Used Donor car is : 2002 Ford Focus Black 5 speed Manual - VIN: 1FAFP34P32W332356 PCM: PLN4 : 1S4F-12A650-AAE : LP2-315
What do these other numbers means?
Please help. Thx Rick

Wh

Whay other numbers are you asking about?

I would be concerned that the PCM you purchased is not the same pn as the one the car originally had.

Good luck
Paul
OK, now I concerned. Keeping my fingers cross for good luck.

I do not know what many of those numbers are but most relate to the programming of the unit
EEC-V = Electronic Engine Control fifth generation
In the example above 1H03F is a date code:
1=2001
H= August
03 = 3rd day
F=shift, line, etc
3 Aug 2001

Since the donor car has the same powertrain as your car (SPI 5-speed) and you are getting the matching keys the new PCM may be fine but I would have tried to get an exact match - they are available.

Good luck

Thank you so much for your help and guidance.
Question: is there a website that can explain in detail the Ford Focus VIN by each specific digit?

I found another one on eBay, pls assist in breaking down the date, this unit matches up much better to the original car ECU unit.
Your thoughts?

In the unit above 2D11D is the date code:
2 = 2002
D = April
11 = 11th day
D = shift, line, etc
11 April 2002

This is fairly close to the date code on your original unit 2F12E
2 = 2002
F = June
12 = 12th day
E = shift, line, etc
12 June 2002

Good luck
