At 141k, I've realized I need to replace the timing belt! And might as well replace everything else while I'm in there: tensioner, idler, water pump, acc belt, acc tensioner, motor mount.

Been following a couple different youtube vids and am half way done...everything is removed. Now it's time to turn the wrenches the other way and start installing stuff.

Timing belt tensioner is first, and it doesn't work like any of the videos I've seen.

At 24:23 in this video, the little fork thing moves clockwise to the mark on the tab.

At 1:23 in this video, no mention of the fork thing, but squeezing the belt moves the fork thing.

At 2:07 in this video, again the fork thing moves clockwise to the mark on the tab.

My new tensioner doesn't do either of these, and doesn't have a mark on the tab. I put the tensioner on and snug up the 10mm bolt, but it's loose enough that the hex thing can move. I put the timing belt on (camshaft pulleys are loose) and turn the hex thing, and my fork thing doesn't move at all, but the entire tensioner moves right or left...you can see the tab moving right or left in the slot. I get it set for what looks like correct tension on the timing belt and tighten the 10mm bolt, but when I squeeze the belt like the 2nd video, nothing happens.

I put my old tensioner back on and it does the exact same thing. (The old one has a mark on the tab.)

So, I'm confused. Do I just set the tension on the belt, tighten the 10mm bolt, and call it good? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for your help...this is a head scratcher!

Well, it turns out the tensioner just needed to be man-handled once the timing belt tension was set. The little fork thing still didn't move when I moved the hex thing, but like in the 2nd video above, it moved if I squeezed the belt.

Thanks to a neighbor who as been a mechanic several years, I now have a running Focus again.

(Man, that timing belt was bad...cracks everywhere. I was definately on borrowed time with that thing!)
