Horrible noise coming from engine.

Hi. My gf's 2002 Focus ZTW DOHC is making a consistent noise upon start up. I drove it last week and noticed a whining noise from the engine. Yesterday she drove it and now its making a rattling noise, but doesn't sound like a rod knock. After running for 10 seconds, it quiets down, and is there when revved up. I pulled the valve cover, started it up and all valves moved (not recommended due to mess). Belt tensioner replaced two months ago along with alternator and has a/c compressor. What is wrong with it?

Just started it up again. Did the "rod knock" test with no change in volume of noise. Volume of noise changed after a minute.

Remove your belt & see how the noise is.

I had this problem years ago. glad you found it before it fell off like on my car. Was going down the road, pulley and belt went flying. (all after a dealer serviced the timing belt on the car and likely did not use the proper torque or locktite on the bolts.)

These bolts are one of the few bolts I locktight on.
