URGENT: MASS RESIDENTS.... House Bill 2011 - Aftermarket Exhaust BAN

Hey all Massachusetts residents,

I read in the latest SEMA monthly bulletin that the House of Reps is renewing its efforts to ban aftermarket exhausts and modifying of stock ones.

Please check out: http://www.sema.org/main/semaorghome.aspx?id=54732
http://www.semasan.com/main/main.aspx?id=61569

I wrote the following letter, please write something to the state Reps.
====================================================

Dear House Representative:

I am writing in regards to House Bill number 2011.
http://www.mass.gov/legis/bills/hous...df/ht02011.pdf

I am a Ph.D. Graduate Student in Chemistry at Northeastern
University. I am aware of noise as a source of pollution. I run very
sensitive experiments that require absolute removal of all noise. I do
however also enjoy the sound of my exhaust system on my economy Ford
Focus SVT. It is a performance minded vehicle, however it does this
because the exhaust system is more efficient than even the base model
Ford Focus. Many people clamor to upgrade their exhaust system for not
only the beautiful exhaust note, but also for the improvement in fuel
economy.
In this time in our country when we are trying to limit our
reliance
on outside sources of crude oil, we need to improve our usage of these
limited resources. This bill would send us backwards in this regard not
to mention putting the States lower wage labor (namely exhaust shops
and performance shops) in jeopardy.
House Bill 2011 also neglects to provide law enforcement officials
with a standard with which to enforce, which makes for the judgment of
whether a modified exhaust or stock exhaust is in violation. In my own
case I feel like an unknowing law enforcement official under the guise
of this law (if enacted) would judge my STOCK exhaust to be
non-compliant or in violation, even though it is very much a factory
piece. If I can say this about a stock piece, how does one provide an
adequate measure of the violation with which to issue fines or
citations.

Please consider this in the near future when this bill comes up for
discussion. I urge you to rethink your current standpoint on the issue.
This is directly aimed at noise pollution and indirectly at minor
infractions of emission ( which can be dealt with in the emissions
testing not by sound emission ).

Sinerely,
Brian N. Hult

we have a law in PR very similar to this...
it say it illegal to modify the exhaust to make noise...

so many of the cases are just drop on the court...
people go with the argument that the exhaust was to make the car perform better...not to make noise...

but yet the police target hondas with fart cans...
have a friend with a civic (no rice at all) with a 2.5 exhauts and fart can (only rice on his car)...
my car is at leas 10x louder than his and he got so many tickets for exhauts modification that he just got rid of it...

maybe you can say that the exhaust rusted and you put a SS one just to make it last longer

Nice comments, We are just trying to get the bill shutdown before it becomes a law. Then we won't have to deal with such nonsense.

I got pulled over twice, once in my old zx3 with a magnaflow (which was more than quiet enough) and once a couple months ago with my SVT (borla orp combo, which is more than loud enough). In my zx3, I just said I bought the exhaust and magnaflow said it was legal, and the cop let me go. The second time in my SVT, the cop gave me a fix it ticket, but was bull shitting with me about it. He said he personally didnt care, he was just doing his job. And he said all exhaust modifications are illegal already. I should print that bill out and show the next cop who pulls me over for it, just to prove it's not a law yet. It's gonna suck if it passes, cause I'm not going back to stock.

This is scary stuff! I have the Borla which is not noisy, it helped with fuel economy and power. I am all for people, or rather IDIOTS out there driving without catalytic converters and street-illegal race headers. They should all have they're car impounded for good, auctioned off, and use the proceeds to pave my highways better (128 is a mess). I am totally serious. An illegal setup is just that, illegal, and you get what you deserve. But us smart people that don't just cut out the cat and put on race track only legal parts should not have to suffer for the retards out there with the illegal fartcan setups. Loud for loud's sake is bad, but loud for performance, tough I say. Man, Mass. is scary sometimes.

I think EVERY state should have vehicle inspections to stop the illegal setups, and I thinks it's completely stupid that some states don't, IE redneck Florida. I was there last year and sooooooo many cars driving around that would never pass inspection here in mass. Exhaust's falling off, belching some serious pullution into OUR breathing air.

No need to get into name calling. I dont use a cat, and I'm not a retard, nor am I an idiot. I just choose not to be environment friendly, and if I get in trouble doing it, that's my choice. Are you against it because it's loud, or cause it wrecks the environment? In which case, do you recycle, avoid styrophome cups, and not use aerosal cans? Not trying to be a dick, or start an argument, I just dont take getting called a retard or an idiot lightly at all, though I'm not sure if it was directed at me specifically.

not only that but without a cat, you will still be running cleaner then 40% or so vehicles on the road and pass smog easily.

most vehicles i have owned i have either punched out the cats or pulled them off. no emissions testing=no cats

Not a tree hugger or anything, but yes I do recycle and avoid aresol. Guys, you notice this winter was kinda like a cold spring? January here in Mass was like a mild september. Wonder why? Cause iditos drive around with crappy cars polluting our environent. Now, your cars aren't crappy, but if you run no cat your crappin' into your own air supply. Just plain DUMB. And if your state doesn't check for smog, well you live in a great state. Lucky you. Guess Massachusetts just cares a little more about our air and environment. Sorry to be so harsh on that last one, but come on, no cat setups are great for race tracks, but if your on the road with it I, ME, I think your an idiot, and I hope you get tickets for it.

Well this bill is more geared toward noise than emissions, so... the pollution (NOx and SOx etc. are great concerns, but not a part of the proposed bill we are discussing.
