Part out vs Sell

I have a 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 2.0/A4 with ~165K miles. The only mechanical issue(which is a rather big deal) is third gear is slipping when under heavy load.

My question is.. Is it better to sell outright or part out the car? I have looked in to the process of parting out and understand it may take 6+months to sell the parts.. How much should I expect from parting out vs selling outright?

Thanks

Best off selling the whole car vs parting it out. Do you have the time & room to strip it down & store the parts? You'll need to figure out the weight, packing & shipping costs as well as text/talk & have good pictures as well as tell the condition of the different parts/assemblies. What does a like condition/mileage vehicle go for? Then figure out what another trans goes for. Another words is it worth installing another trans in it?

Sounds like a new clutch is in the near future for this car, but if that is the only issue I agree with the other replies to sell outright, but priced accordingly.

Any ideas on the how much for parting out? Basically, I am trying to decide if its worth it or not..

I can drive it down to a scrap yard and get $2-300 for it, but if I go through all the effort to list, sell, ship all the parts is it really worth it?

Anyone gone down this road before?

Time is money. When does the registration expire and how much is it to renew? I got $400 from the salvage yard for my 2002 ZTS with 180,000 miles, that was in 2012. Another option... donate the car for the tax write off. I donated my 1989 Volvo 245 to a community college in 2003. The school automotive department did the following... if the car was repairable by the students, then it was repaired and offered for sale to students. If the car was thought to be a basket case, then the school parted it out. When I was shopping for my 2007 Focus wagon and checked it out on car fax, I looked up my old Volvo and found that it was still on the road.

Not on a Ford but we parted out a car in the past. In that case it was a 1999 Infiniti G20 that was from Texas so it had no rust. We had to do this from inside the garage because the town we live in has strict laws against partial cars or non-running cars not being allowed on driveways.

Anyway, we paid $250 for the car (crashed in front) and took 10 months to part it out and made $1800 (so we sold off parts to the tune of $2050 when all said and done)... THEN we had to cut up the car and put it to the curb because at the time no junkyard would take a shell and steel prices were so pathetic it wasn't worth the effort.. used up a bunch of sawzall blades so lets make that $1750 when all said and done.

We said then that we would never go through that hassle again of parting out but here we are 10 years later contemplating it with a 2002 SVT ourselves that is taking up a garage spot now.. lol

THIS^^^

If that's the only big issue, consider a salvage yard trans.
