audio mixing software and components

so I'm looking into getting myself into music making/mixing field ans since I'm a total noob when it comes to this stuff I'm looking for some guidance.

what I need help in, is being pointed in the right direction for xmas this year I have asked for a new laptop, I'll more than likely get a new toshiba of some sort and yes I know for music I should get a mac, but I'm not the one buying the laptop.

what I am looking for is something I can make my own beats/ riffs etc on and control tempo/speeds, cue music etc

now keep in mind the majority of the music shall be EDM based

To my knowledge, you can't create beats with Audacity. It's just a free recording software.

Fruity Loops could be your best bet, especially if you are a noob. I've played with it plenty of times but never got the hang of it probably because I don't have the time to read up and educate myself on the whole process. It'll work fine on any PC as well, it doesn't need MAC power. lol.

You're better off buying a used MacBook (2009 or newer) because Garageband is free and includes way more features than FruityLoops. The learning curve on Garageband is very simple compared to Fruity Loops and it's much easier to jump into Garageband and start making music right away. Garageband has a few upgrade packs that include instruments loops and plug-ins that are all relatively inexpensive, and if you decide to upgrade you can go to Logic Pro X for $199, plus Logic is compatible with Garageband and all of your files will translate seamlessly.

If you stick with the PC platform, you can start with FruityLoops but if you ever decided to upgrade, you're looking at hundreds of dollars just for software like Reason or Abelton while running the risk of losing everything you had in FruityLoops.

If you absolutely don't have the choice to go to a Mac, I would suggest you start with Reason Essentials. It's like $80 and it's cheaper then to upgrade to Reason later on and all your files will remain intact.

+1 Fruity loops, I didn't find it very hard to use. There are other sequencers out there as well, try them all.

well so far from using virtual Dj free addition I've been able to mash some songs so here they are. I just got the cracked version of fruity loops so I'll have to play with it for a while and once I get it figured out I'll post some more of my stuff up

here is the link to the stuff I've messed with so far

Hello kwg2371, I use a program that I bought some time back for pretty darn cheap, I was a beginner as well . I wasn't expecting it to be so great but it really surprised me and produced a solid sound. I got it .. Its also fairly intuitive for my controllers and pads .. I got it down and used it with pretty fair efficiency in a few days.. you can make my own beats/ riffs etc on and control tempo/speeds, and all the things you mentioned and more.. from this website I also am a big fan of EDM and which is mostly what I make, so I really hope this helps you as much as it helped me.
:)

I tried helping set a musician friend a year or so ago, and I know very little, but this comes to mind;

Audacity, even if it seems to simple to ever be of use.

Ardour for the full-fledged work station.

But keep in mind you will probably have to contend with jack/pulse, especially for input.

Which often means using cadence or qjackctl (plus some reading and headaches)
