Engine Fault - Service Now Help

My 2014 Ford Focus SE has 88,243 miles. Yesterday it was driving normal on my way to work. About 2 blocks from work I get the message "Engine Fault Service Now." All the dash lights came on and the dash screen went black. I drove to work and it wasn't acting strange driving-wise.

I park and turn the car off and after a minute or so, I tried starting it and I didn't hear it trying to start at all. After work, my dad comes and we test battery and try jumping it. That didn't work. We then disconnect the positive battery terminal for a couple minutes and reconnect. The car started right up with check engine light on.

It drove like normal home (about 15 miles) and we plug obd2 scanner in and it says "no fault codes." Check engine light is still on. We pressed clear codes and the light goes away. No code history either.

Any idea why this happened and what caused it? I drove it 40 min to school and it was fine. Software glitched out and reset itself when battery was disconnected?

Correct you did a software reset and cleared any codes as well when you tool the Batt loose , Sounds like you have a TCM going out would be my guess

I'm guessing TCM too. Mine went out and I had to have it towed to dealer for replacement as it was preventing me from even starting the vehicle. It just died one day as I was approaching a stop sign.

thank you! I thought it was weird how it was an engine fault message instead of transmission? I planned to get new clutch and tcm next month when we are out of college for christmas break and planned on buying your tune when I have extra money.

May try waiting for it to go out. I think the TCM is covered until 10 years 150K. You've only got 88K you said. On my 13, my TCM went out at 97K. When my TCM went completely out, the car would rev way up and not want to shift. Almost as though you were learning drive a stick is how it would run. Rev up really high and not want to move, and then really only at lower speeds. When the car did shift, the shifts were pretty violent as I recall at times. I know have between 104K and 105K and it's doing well.

I think at this point I'm keeping the car a good while. Bought my car when my credit was shot, and basically am upside down on it. But I only have 2 more years to pay on it. Plus it was rear ended last month. Got it back and it looks great now. Need to replace a front headlight that moisture is getting into, but other than that, the car is running good.

The other thing that I may have to deal with however, is from time to time I get a message for power steering assist fault. Looks like it could be 1500-2000 to fix that. But since my car was rear ended, then resale value might be in the tank. We put 500 miles a week on cars, we have that and a chevy sonic we switch between to even out the miles. But thinking even when we get a newer vehicle, maybe keep that just to put miles on.
