Anybody actually had a TCM last?

Started payments on my 2016 in May of 2017. Soon found out about shudder on the car, then made plans for Tom's tune. I have it now, finally got it this year.

Carfax had 14M02 work in February of 17. Seeing as how the car had 45k when I got it, probably was done between 40-45k

Now I'm up to 84k, and yesterday I go to leave a red light, and the car didn't seem like it wanted to go. Tachometer seemed frozen for a couple seconds, then the revs dropped like it was downshifting and I was on my way.

I left a stop again and once again, another goofy shift, not as bad as before. Seems like these TCMs average 40k before their deathbed based on other posts I've seen. I fail to understand why Ford cannot get this fixed. I know it could be something else, but I see it as unlikely.

Anyone gotten more than 40-60k out of a TCM? I love having Tom's tune but if I'm gonna have to keep replacing the damn TCM every couple years, I can't exactly see keeping the car beyond the TCM extension. At least not once it's paid off. I wanted to drive the car until it died completely but it seems like I'll just be nickel and dime'd if I do that, considering the average repair is $1200 outside the warranty.

My wife's 2013 has 130k on it and has the original TCM though it has been reprogrammed twice.

I'm sure mine had updates, but the original in my 13 lasted until 97k or so.

So far the car hasn't done what it did again, but I have a thing where it lurches at parking lot speed. Seems like every time I try to move 100 feet in a drive through and stop it does it. Also seems to be a connection with ground that isn't level/on a slight slope. Not sure if it's just a DCT thing or what.

Two questions for you, if you don't mind:
1. What was the Strategy on your car, for programming purposes? When I tried to get Tom's tune on my kids' 2015 and 2016 cars, the strategy was not supported, and they couldn't say when it would be, so I finally returned the programmer to Tom. My strategy is CXBG3P7 (same for both cars.)

2. So it sounds like Tom's tune didn't really do enough to keep the problem from recurring?

Thanks,
Todd

I'll have to get back to you on the strategy but my 2016 had a strategy that was covered. That's a matter of SCT adding the strategy; Tom has no control over it other than calling them and getting them to add it.

Tom's tune has been a great help for my DCT. I'm still monitoring it for an occasional shudder though, but it's very hard to replicate it seems like. Up until recently I didn't have any shudder though, which times out around the time it started getting really hot outside (85+ and high humidity). I've had the Tune since early March now. The DCT will be changed different between cars, so it's possible what I'm seeing is something that needs changed yet on the software. Other than that, it's either heat or the fact that I put 31k on the clutches before the tune.

That parking lot lurch may be a result of driving at a speed too low for clutch engagement. It may be me braking in the middle of the clutches getting started. I'm unsure, but it's only a minor nitpick as far as DCT behavior.

Jason

Also, what happened in the original post seems to be a slip into neutral, which is not a clutch issue, but rather the TCM. There have been times where it didn't feel like it has much power, but it hasn't beeń anywhere concerning as it was that day.

I have no idea. If I knew 100% that the TCM issues were fixed for good, I'd love this car to hell and back. I'm just worried about having to replace it beyond the 150k warranty extension.

My wife's 14 Titanium has 156,000 miles on it and my 17 SEL has 63000 miles. Worrying about 150,000 miles? Things are going to break on any car at that age. Looking around it seems the price on the TCM itself has dropped like a rock:

I don't see labor being that intense due to where it is located.

Is that the latest revision of the TCM? I wonder if Ford will replace the module if you buy it.

I actually found out just recently that I have the original TCM. I bought a new Carfax and it simply had listed that 14M02 was issued for my vehicle on February 7th, 2017.

I know high mileage vehicles have their issues, but Ford overcharges on labor/parts for everything. Well, most automakers these days do, anyway.

Seems the new TCMs have been vastly improved. From the data I've scoured, 12-14 MY Foci and Fiesta seemed to have the worst modules. 15-18 seems like the failures are rare/non-existent.

Gonna keep an eye on my TCM obviously though.
