Here's a link to a writeup stickied on the Tuning section on how to use the SCT XCal4 flasher:

http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/f...sct-xcal4.html

The simple description is that you get a small hand held computer (flasher/scanner) that plugs into the car at the OBD data port.

That can download data from the car as well as download current "tune" for storage and upload a different one.

It is used along with a normal computer for online updates to the unit, and E-Mail receipt of "tunes"/sending of datalogs of results while the car is running.

Getting started is a process, first you receive/update the flasher as required then use the tool to get your car's current "strategy" (tune information) to forward to the Tuner. Then he can E-Mail you an initial "tune" to load to the device and from that to the car.

Exchange of datalogs and info. on results for new tunes can make further adjustments as required/desired.

You can always "reflash" the car to the stock tune stored in the device. At that point the car is returned to stock as far as tuning is concerned, and the device is unlocked to be used again on that or another car.

Probably to let the owners of 2016s (Beta testers) run them long enough to see if the new design really fixed the problems it was supposed to and did not introduce any new ones of its own before using it to replace prior versions in older cars.

If your theory is correct, that might explain why Ford did not want to produce the older versions in large enough quantities to eliminate the backlog of orders quickly. No sense building a lot of something that is soon to become obsolete.

^^^ Makes sense and matches long standing rumors.

Last time there was an update it only changed packaging (seals included with clutch pack) so none needed to be recalled from stock when a new version debuted.

Just had my DCT kick the bucket last week after almost 70,000 miles. Was driving back to the office after lunch and the check engine light came on and every shift was hard and noisy. I've always had some shutter issue and stuff but not really that bad so I never took it in to have the work done as I am very aware of the horror story on clutch repair.

I tried to back it into a parking spot but it wound't reverse. Emailed my dealership and I got an email back in a hour that said it was the TCM and likely the clutches and to have it towed in. When I talked to the service guy he was pretty much like 'You have the Focus right? We'll take care of it; they have had transmission issues for awhile now and you've never had any of the service stuff done on it.'

2 days later I got a phone call that said they replaced the TCM, updated the software, and replaced the clutches and seals. On the serivce papers he put that I had been have 'severe' stutter and noise problems and it said they tested it and it was waaay out of spec. I never had bad shutter issue or said that so no idea if they said that to try and nudge Ford to approve the new clutch; AFAIK you have to fail the test no matter what to get a new clutch.

Over the past 200 miles it has driven like a dream and shifts really differently from how it used to; it acts like a full automatic tranny now. Shifts 10x better then the 2015 rental on a trip last year. Still a few odd noises at low speed or take off from a light but that is probably just the DCT being...the DCT. I don't think they will ever get it fully 'right'.

Clutch part number seems to be the newest ones from the 2016s (F1FZ-7B546-B) and my dealer acted like this is regular repair and they just had the parts around. Not sure if I just got lucky and have an awesome dealer or if maybe Ford is more confident in the fixes and are pumping out the new parts.

This is good to hear. I'm hoping they put these new clutches in when I take mine back on 9/14. It would be nice to not have my passengers (especially my wife) asking what that noise was or why the car is shaking, etc.

Getting my oil change and tire rotation on the 9th, hopefully they will flash the new TCM update. Might just nudge them that way.

They won't unless you request it. If you don't have TSB 15B22(search for it) request that and then ask them to reflash to newest update.

Missed the free program by a month or so, reflash now might only be for a complaint on operation.

Your results may vary, don't know how they're actually handling that.

The new clutch designs are evidently a different design as their part numbers are different from the prior series (BV6Z-7B546-F).

New Focus part number: F1FZ-7B546-B
New Fiesta part number: FA6Z-7B546-A
Update:

I had my clutches replaced today and new TCM programmed.

I had confirmed before and after that the F1FZ-7B546-B part was installed in my car. In fact, I told them that I would be willing to wait if they did not have it available and were planning on installing the F revision again (that's what I had from about 10 months ago).

When I received the car back today, every single shift, save one, was completely smooth. I could not tell I was driving a DCT; very much felt like the rental BMW X5 that I had. The one shift that jerked a little was when I had just turned the car one and was proceeding from a stop. It was fine after that.

I drove almost 40 miles after receiving the car back. It was perfect on the freeway, streets, and in stop and go traffic.

I am very pleased with this update. More than I was with the F revision last year.

The service adviser confirmed that this was the part in the 2016 model and that I have a "99% chance of this being the last replacement" for this car. He said I should not have any problem with this replacement combination.

Additionally, I had rented an X5 (w/corporate discount it only cost about $15 more than a standard midsize rental) for a day. While it drove a lot smoother than the Focus, I do have to say that I had more fun driving the Focus (especially after the replacement). There are a lot more blindspots on the X5. Never knew how much I appreciated the Focus' blindspot mirror (and the large overall mirror).

Obviously, it was much quieter in the X5. Next time, I'll take the Camaro convertible if it's available again. My other option was an Explorer for the "luxury class" from Enterprise, but I figured I might as well try a German car while I had the chance.

Anywho, I'm looking forward to driving the Focus again tomorrow. Hopefully it gets a lot warmer so I can really test out how temperature-resistant the new clutches are.

The RPMs tend to smoothly shift, although they do hang at 3-3.2k, I ASSUME to smooth out the shift back downwards.

I would have preferred if the shifts were similar to crisp manual shifts, but if we can't get that, I am happy with CVT style smooth "shifts."

Next test will be next week when I have to drive through some anticipated heavy traffic. If it can make it through that, I will have high hopes for the performance of this clutch replacement, albeit longevity is still unknown.
