As I mentioned elsewhere, doing this has greatly reduced, if not all but eliminated the shuddering issue I occasionally experienced in 1st gear. I think it somehow re-teaches the software where to shift from 1st to 2nd. Occasionally, just to reinforce this learning process, I will select 1st gear, and keep it there just to run the rpm's up and down to/from 4k. After that, it is good to go for a while.

But, the shuddering my car used to experience did not seem to be clutch slip. It was very noticeable that it was the shift actuators getting confused and engaging/disengaging. With the windows down, I could actually hear the solenoids clicking away.

Good info, thanks. I'll try that today on my way home. I've had the car for 3 months & haven't used the Sport mode once. Look, I guess I was venting a little because I really like the car, it's sporty & has a ton of options but the shuddering deal does bug me. And it's like the last thing I wanna do is leave the car at the dealer for anything. I'm just going to drive it for awhile & see how it goes. If it really starts bothering me again I'll just take it back to the service dept. when I have a day off, during the week. Apparently the transmission specialist at my dealer isn't there on Sat. which makes it difficult for many.

Does anyone else experience an annoying rattle in connection with this shudder issue? The shudder doesn't bother me as much as the rattle does.

Hi Pokerrun388,

I can check into some additional options. I see in another post you mentioned not wanting to leave your car at the dealership; it's home with you now, correct?

Hi Meagan. First of all sorry for the late reply, I'm not on these forums often. Well here's the deal. I know there's a problem with the clutch. The sputtering & shuddering at times on acceleration isn't right & it should never do it. I almost feel at times as though I'm driving a manual even though it's an AT. It's hard to explain. So yes, I took the car into the deal once & didn't leave it because after the tech drove it around the street he told me it "drove well" & I got the feeling if I left my car there for a day that they would call me back the next day & say "we've determined there isn't a problem". And in that case I left my car there for nothing. Plus I really don't wanna leave it & risk getting a scratch or door ding etc. Some of this I blame myself for not doing my search on the car & just buying it for "looks & style". Big mistake. But often times when you buy a car you're excited & miss certain things. I haven't decided yet if I'll take it back & leave it or I'll just drive it until I'm frustrated enough & trade it in for something else. The cars paid for so I'm not really thinking about that right now.

Oh wow, I just bought my daughter a 2012 Focus hatchback with 66,000 miles on it, so just out of factory warranty. Will this extended warranty Ford is doing cover her car I wonder? Anyone have any input? Thanks for your response. JB

Just look at the next stickie down:http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=455833

Warranty extension through a Customer Satisfaction Campaign on programing, shaft seals & clutch pack.

Separately, keep in mind that the TCM (Transmission Control Module) is covered under Emissions Warranty 'till 80,000.

Hey all-

So I bought a 2012 Focus SE with 39k miles on it back in August. Had a bit of a shudder since I bought it. Service department checked it out - transmission seal leak. They replaced the seals and clutch.

About three weeks after I got it back (with occasional very hard shifting - I nearly hit my face on the steering wheel once), my car just about broke down on the highway - clunking and whistling noise, inability to accelerate and a warning on the dashboard of a transmission malfunction. Towed to the dealer, burnt out clutch from leaking transmission seals. Replaced seals and clutch a second time.

I've had it back a week, and I think the trans is now starting to slip again. It sometimes feels a little sluggish in acceleration. Sometimes if at highway speed (say 60 mph), the RPMs will drop from about 2300 to about 1500 immediately when I take my foot off the gas, and rev again when I hit the gas again (and sometimes it won't). I know it was doing this before the clutch burnt out last time (No lurching during shifting though (so far)) - so is this normal or part of the breaking in period or something, is my car about to break down again? I guess I've never had a properly functioning transmission, so I have no control group for comparison.

Thank you so much.

Thanks for the follow up! I never saw that you replied, sorry about that.

Have you had any updates since this post?

Welcome to the forum!

Is your daughter's Focus experiencing these symptoms? If so, I recommend heading to the dealer for a diagnostic. Please let me know if you do, so I can look into some options.

Hi BertiferousRex,

I want to look into this further. Please send me a private message with your VIN, mileage, best daytime phone number, full name, and dealer name/location.
