Focus MK3 IKT Key Programming Issues

Just wanted to throw this out here as it took me a long time to find some useful information on the problem I was having.

Just to give you some background, I recently purchased a 2012 Focus SEL HB MT and wanted a third key. I purchased a refurbished IKT key from an online seller and had it cut by a local locksmith. I understood that I could do the programming myself as I had 2 original keys. The instructions are within the owners manual.

When I performed the procedure as written the new key would not be accepted. The following post lead me to the resolution that the Ford procedure wasn't written correctly. I modified it and voila it worked!

So the modification is at the end, I determined that 6 seconds was too long. It should be more like 3-6 seconds then then turn off and remove the key. There will be no confirmation or flashing security light (as in the video from the post). If you see the NO KEY DETECTED message within the information centre they have waited too long.

Below are the instructions from the 2012 owners manual. Apply the change to step 8.

As a side note, I found out that you can upgrade your key to a switchblade style key used in later models. I wish I had known this before I bought my key. Information is in this post >> Key fob programming with only one key

Programming spare integrated keyhead transmitter (IKT) keys

If you have intelligent access keys, refer to Programming spare
intelligent access keys in this section.

You can program your own integrated keyhead transmitters or standard
SecuriLock coded keys to your vehicle. This procedure will program
both the engine immobilizer keycode and the remote entry transmitter
portion of the IKT to your vehicle. Note: A maximum of eight coded
keys can be programmed to your vehicle; all eight can be IKTs with
remote entry functionality.
Tips:
• Only use integrated keyhead transmitters (IKTs) or standard
SecuriLock keys.
• You must have two previously programmed coded keys (keys that
already operate your vehicle’s engine) and the new unprogrammed
key(s) readily accessible.
• If two previously programmed coded keys are not available, you must
take your vehicle to your authorized dealer to have the spare key(s)
programmed.

Please read and understand the entire procedure before you begin.

1. Insert the first previously programmed coded key into the ignition.
2. Turn the ignition from off to on. Keep the ignition on for at least three
seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition off and remove the first coded key from the ignition.
4. After three seconds but within ten seconds of turning the ignition off,
insert the second previously coded key into the ignition.
5. Turn the ignition from off to on. Keep the ignition on for at least three
seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
6. Turn the ignition off and remove the second previously programmed
coded key from the ignition.
7. After three seconds but within 10 seconds of turning the ignition off
and removing the previously programmed coded key, insert the new
unprogrammed key (new key/valet key) into the ignition.
8. Turn the ignition from off to on. Keep the ignition on for at least six
seconds.
9. Remove the newly programmed coded key from the ignition.
If the key has been successfully programmed it will start the vehicle’s
engine and will operate the remote entry system (if the new key is an
integrated keyhead transmitter).

If the key was not successfully programmed, it will not start your
vehicle’s engine and/or will not operate the remote entry features. The
message center will display: NO KEY DETECTED. Wait 10 seconds and
you may repeat Steps 1 through 8. If failure repeats, bring your vehicle
to your authorized dealer to have the new key(s) programmed.

To program additional new unprogrammed key(s), wait 20 seconds and
then repeat this procedure from Step 1.
